MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Delaware baseball (30-27) used solid pitching and timely hitting and defense to bounce host #4 Charleston (34-21) in the first round of the CAA Tournament, winning 7-4 on Wednesday.
Charleston tacked on three runs in the second inning against Joey Silan, but the team never wilted, even down 3-0 heading into the fourth.
The Hens came back in the fourth inning. Andrew Amato roped an RBI single to score two off CAA Pitcher of the Year Ty Good, and Tyler Leach followed with a big single of his own to knot it up.
Jake Dunion made an incredible diving catch in the fifth to save an extra-base hit.
Leach was at it again in the sixth, clobbering a two-run shot to extend the lead to 5-3.
"We were in a tight game there and battled back," Leach said. "I was just trying to make something happen with runners on base, wasn't expecting a home run but got a pitch up and put a good swing on it."
Silan ran into trouble in the seventh but was bailed out by Anthony Gubitosi, who got an out on one pitch to close out the threat.
Against William Privette, Delaware added two insurance runs in the ninth. Bryce Greenly drove in a run on a bunt single, and with a runner on third, Joey Loynd cashed in to make it 7-4.
Gubitosi fired a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the season.
Loynd, Leach and Aidan Kane each had multiple hits, while Gubitosi fanned three in relief.
Delaware will await its opponent for Thursday's game.
