Late Heroics, Strong Pitching Seals Crucial Series Win for Baseball Over Stony Brook

NEWARK, Del. – Down 3-0 after one frame, Delaware baseball (23-24, 12-11 CAA) bent but did not break, securing an important CAA series win over Stony Brook (19-25, 10-13 CAA), winning 8-3 on Saturday night.
"They had all the momentum early, we couldn't get anything going offensively and everything was on the barrel for them early," head coach Greg Mamula said. "You're just trying to keep your head above water and we did that, and once Joey [Silan] settled in, we got their guy's pitch count up and capitalized."
After allowing three runs (two earned) in the first inning, Joey Silan settled in and set the tone for the rest of the game, pitching seven strong innings and tying a career-high with nine strikeouts, including retiring six in a row at one point via the K.
"I felt like I was pulling off in the first inning and got back into attacking and throwing it in the zone," Silan said. "When you have an offense like this, all you have to do is keep them in the game because they're going to explode at some point. As long as I kept them close, I knew we would do that."
Delaware slowly chipped away against Stony Brook's Josh O'Neill. Aidan Kane had a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Tyler Leach added one of his own in the sixth, making it a 3-2 ballgame.
The seventh inning was where the Blue Hens took control. Dan Covino led off with a walk, and Joey Loynd instantly chased him home with a triple to the deepest part of the ballpark to knot the game at three.
Still facing O'Neill with two runners on, Andrew Amato golfed his fifth home run of the season just over the right-field wall to give the Blue Hens a 6-3 lead, returning all the momentum in the home team's favor.
JJ Freeman charged his tenth home run of the season in the eighth, staying hot and driving in two important insurance runs to seal the win.
Wyatt Nelson fired two scoreless innings in relief to earn his second save of the season.
Freeman once again recorded a multi-hit effort, his fifth consecutive and now is batting an even .500 (18-for-36) over his last seven games, and homered for the third consecutive contest. Bryce Greenly also notched multiple knocks in the win.
Delaware will aim for its ninth consecutive home conference victory on Sunday. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m. with Tyler Strechay taking the bump.
