Men’s Soccer Tops Rutgers for First Power 5 Win Under McMenemy

NEWARK, Del. – Back-to-back goals in the second half gave the University of Delaware men's soccer team an insurmountable lead as it topped Rutgers 3-2 in the season opener Thursday night. The defending B1G champs entered the match receiving votes in the most recent national polls.
The win marked the first over a Power 5 school since 2019 when the Blue Hens downed #23 West Virginia, 1-0, on September 2.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Carlos Fernandez, Cristobal Granada, and Jordan Miller had a goal each.
- Sam Donnellan, Liam Fuller, Einar Hardarson, T.J. Hastings, Jan Schroeder, and Justin Ruth each recorded an assist.
- Eddie DeMarco registered six saves in his first career win.
- Fernandez scored off an assist from Donnellan and Hastings in the 19th minute with a booming shot from inside the box.
- DeMarco made a heroic save with less than five minutes remaining in the first half off a breakaway opportunity.
- Rutgers responded with 12 seconds remaining in the first half, tying the game 1-1.
- Granada found the back of the net on a rebound effort off the crossbar from Hardarson and Fuller during the 75th minute.
- Miller pushed the deficit to two, with the eventual game-winning goal less than three minutes later after feeds from Schroeder and Ruth.
- Rutgers responded with its final score in the 87th minute.
- DeMarco tallied his first-ever start Thursday night.
- Seven Blue Hens made their first career appearances: T.J. Hastings, Luke Chatten, Sean Smith, Jan Schroeder, Ethan Williams, Thaddeus Glasser, Richard Monath. Hastings, Monath, Schroeder, and Smith all made their first career starts.
