Cross Country Competes at 50th Annual Paul Short Run

BETHLEHEM, Pa. –The University of Delaware cross country traveled to Bethlehem, Pa. for the second time this season set to compete at the 50th annual Paul Short Run Saturday morning from Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The Blue Hens were ready to see action in both the open 6K and the Gold 6K races. The open 6K was headlined by four personal-best times and two season-best times being set while the Herrera twins shined in the Gold 6K, a section the Blue Hens raced in for the second consecutive campaign.
COACHES' QUOTE
"I'm proud of the team's effort today," head coach Josh Hayman said. "We saw significant improvement from last year's result at this event, with most setting personal bests. More importantly, we got some valuable experience that will help us adjust as we get closer to the championship season."
HENS HIGHLIGHTS
Open Race:
- As a team, Delaware racked up 341 points to finish in 13th place out of 44 teams.
- Nina Sgambelluri was the first Blue Hen to cross the finish line with a season-best time of 22:44.4 (50th overall).
- Kadence Dumas followed behind Sgambelluri with a personal-best time of 22:48.3 (53rd overall).
- Lauren Thomas (PB, 22:51.7, 56th overall), Katie Kuhlman (PB, 23:54.4, 156th overall) and Reagan Forkey (23:59.7, 163rd overall) rounded out the Blue & Gold's scoring five.
- Libby DeMichele (PB, 24:04.0), Anna Pryor (24:06.9), Jordan Blanck (24:19.1) and Nicole Re (SB, 25:10.2) all saw action in the 6K.
Gold Race:
- After tallying 919 points, Delaware claimed 34th place out of 42 teams.
- Stephanie Herrera led the charge with a personal-best time of 21:45.2 (143rd overall).
- Behind Stephanie was her sister, Tiffany Herrera, who ran a personal-best time of 22:10.7 (207th overall).
- Rounding out the Blue Hens scoring five were Rachel Starr (PB, 22:13.4, 214th overall), Gabriella Gait-Smith (22:14.8, 219th overall) and Ella Peterson (PB, 22:17.0, 222nd overall).
- Adding to the mix were: Erin McGoey (PB, 22:21.6, 231st overall), Kelly Lynch (SB, 22:24.1, 233rd overall), Marissa Dailey (22:47.3, 274th overall), Danielle Eshelman (22:52.5, 279th overall) and Leah Clear (PB, 22:55.2, 282nd overall).
RACE NOTES
- 10 Blue Hens set new personal-best times while two ran season-best times in their respective events.
- Harvard won the Gold race by racking up 134 points while Chloe Thomas from Connecticut posted a time of 19:23.8 to be crowned meet champion.
- Delaware's 34th-place finish in the Gold race was an improvement from last year's outing (41st out of 44 teams)
- In the open race, CPTC - Tracksmith won the team title by posting 31 points while Selma Anderson ran a time of 21:02.9 for UNA-Syracuse to win the meet.
- This was the Blue Hens' second-best finish in the open race since the 2014 season (eighth out of 31 teams)
UP NEXT
The Blue Hens will return to the trails next Saturday, Oct. 12, set to compete at the Highlander Invitational, hosted by NJIT starting at 12:15 p.m.
