Offense Leads Softball Past N.C. A&T To Secure Weekend Sweep

GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of Delaware softball put up 15 runs and 17 hits while scoring in every inning of a five-inning victory in the finale over North Carolina A&T to secure a weekend sweep.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Five players had at least two hits.
Gianna Costaro hit a grand slam as part of a 2-for-3, six RBI day.
Maddie Fife went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI double.
Ellie Mulligan hit a two-run home run.
Julz Garber went 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
Chloe Blantz went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk.
Sydney Shaffer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk.
Katie Scheivert went 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.
Julia Boyet drove in two runs and walked.
Morgan Hess went 1-for-3 with a double.
Emily Winburn earned her 10th win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Boyet worked a bases loaded walk in the first inning to give Delaware the early lead.
N.C. A&T tied the game in the bottom of the first.
FIfe gave Delaware the lead back with a home run to left field. Winburn pitched a scoreless second inning with a strikeout.
Boyet brought home her second run on a fielder's choice, and Scheivert put Delaware up 4-1 with an RBI double. Fife scored Scheivert with a double to make it 5-1.
Winburn struckout two more in a perfect third.
Delaware extended their lead to 8-1 in the fourth. Blantz drove Garber home after a leadoff double, and Costaro brought home her and Shaffer with a two-run double.
WInburn pitched a hitless fourth inning with another strikeout.
Delaware blew the game open in the top of the fifth with a seven-run inning. Ryleigh Thomas led off with a pinch hit single, Garber singled, then Blantz and Shaffer walked to bring in a run. Costaro came up and hit a grand slam to put the Blue Hens ahead 13-1. Sofia Hollingsworth hit a pinch hit double, then Mulligan hit a pinch hit two-run home run to go up 15-1.
N.C. A&T scored six runs before Kendall Shank came in and got two popouts to close out the game.

GAME NOTES

Delaware has scored double-digit runs in four games so far this season. They scored at least 10 runs in four games last season.
Delaware's 17 hits were their most since having 17 against Towson on April 17, 2022.
Delaware has hit a home run in three straight games for the second time this season. They hit a home run in four straight games from Feb. 17-Feb. 24.
Garber had her second four-hit (Feb. 17, Middle Tennessee State) game of the season and third of her career. She has nine multi-hit games so far this season.
Costaro hit Delaware's first grand slam of the season and first for a Blue Hen since Zoey Valentino on March 4, 2023.
Costaro's six RBIs were a new career-high and tied Shaffer for the most by a Delaware player this season. It is also tied for the sixth most in a game in program history and is the 11th UD player all-time with at least six RBIs in a game.
FIfe's home run was the 18th of her career.
Mulligan's home run was the first of her career.
Scheivert has driven in a run in five consecutive games, the longest streak of her career.
Boyet has six games with at least two RBIs.
Hollingsworth hit was the first of her career.
Winburn's win was the 59th of her career, moving her into second place all-time in UD history.
