Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Penn; Winburn Sets Career Saves Program Record

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball swept a doubleheader from Penn, 1-0 and 7-1, on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 to earn their seventh straight win. During game one, Emily Winburn became Delaware's all-time career saves leader with her ninth.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS, GAME ONE
- Julz Garber drove in the game's only run with an RBI triple as part of a 1-for-3 day.Â
- Ryleigh Thomas went 1-for-2 with a double and scored the only run.Â
- Julia Boyet went 1-for-3.
- Morgan Hess earned the win by pitching 5.1 innings and not allowing a run.
- Winburn picked up the save by recording the final four outs and not allowing a base runner.Â
HEN HIGHLIGHTS, GAME TWO
- Gianna Costaro went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and four RBIs.
- Chloe Blantz went 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and a walk.Â
- Sydney Shaffer went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two doubles.Â
- Hess went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
- Katie Scheivert went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
- Winburn earned the win by allowing no runs, two hits, and striking out three in four innings.
- Kendall Shank pitched 2.1 innings and allowed just a run with a strikeout.
- Graceyn Frost recorded the final two outs.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE
- Hess faced the minimum through three innings, with 1-2-3 innings in the first and second and a double play helping her through the third.Â
- A one-out double by Thomas in the bottom half set up Garber's RBI triple, driving home the game's only run.Â
- Hess pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning as well.
- In the fifth, Hess escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam by coaxing two groundouts.Â
- Winburn came on in the top of the sixth after Penn put runners on second and third with one out. Another double play helped Winburn out of the inning.
- Two groundouts and a flyout finished off Pen in the seventh and secured Delaware's win.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME TWO
- Winburn escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first inning.Â
- In the bottom half, Blantz walked and Costaro hit a two-run home run to get Delaware's offense going.Â
- Winburn pitched a perfect second inning with a strikeout in the second.Â
- Hess doubled with one out in the bottom of the second and came around to score on a fielder's choice and throwing error.Â
- Winburn pitched another hitless third inning. Blanrz led off the bottom half with an opposite-field home run to put Delaware up 4-0.Â
- Two strikeouts in a perfect fourth for Winburn kept Penn off the scoreboard.Â
- Shaffer doubled off the top of the wall to score Scheivert in the bottom of the fourth inning.Â
- Penn scored their only run of the day in the fifth.Â
- Shank pitched a hitless sixth inning with a strikeout.Â
- Delaware scored two runs in the sixth to ice the game. A Shaffer double, Giattino walk, and Garber bunt single loaded the bases. Costaro scored Garber and Giattino with a single to put the Hens up 7-1.Â
- Shank got the first out of the inning before giving way to Frost. An outfield assist by Mulligan in right field cut down a run at home before Frost recorded the final out on a flyball to center.
GAME NOTES
- Winburn passed Chenxio Jiao and Kristi O'Connell to become Delaware's all-time saves leader at nine. She also earned her 60th career win during game two with her fifth scoreless start of the season.Â
- Costaro hit her seventh home run of the season, the most by a Delaware freshman since Brooke Glanden in 2019. She also had her third four-RBI game of the season and second in her last three games.Â
- Blantz hit her second home run of the season and of her career, having also homered during Delaware's game against Akron on Feb. 17.Â
- Garber has hit in six straight games, tying her season-best. Her triple was her second this season and fourth of her career.Â
- Delaware's seven straight wins is their longest win streak of the season.
