Softball Defeats Monmouth To Earn 30th Win Of The Season

NEWARK, DEl. - University of Delaware softball earned their 30th win of the season as they defeated Monmouth, 7-2, on Saturday, April 13, 2024. The Blue Hens have no won six straight games.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Morgan Hess earned the win by pitching six innings and allowed two runs and just one walk with two strikeouts. She also had a double run scored.
Katie Scheivert went 3-for-3 with a run scored, RBI, stplen base, and walk.
Chloe Blantz went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
Sydney Shaffer went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk.
Julz Garber scored two runs and recorded an RBI and stolen base.
Gianna Costaro walked twice.
Lillie Scheivert had a pinch hit single and stole a base.
Kendall Shank threw a scoreless inning and allowed zero hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a perfect first inning from Hess, Garber and Katie Scheivert both had hits to begin the bottom half, and Shaffer singled both home to give Delaware a 2-0 lead.
Hess stranded a runner at second with a strikeout to end a scoreless second. Blantz singled and Costaro walked to begin the bottom of the inning, and a Veronica Diomede sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position. Garber brought Hess home with a groundout and Katie Scheivert scored Costaro with a single, giving Delaware a 4-0 lead.
A diving stop by Katie Scheivert saved a run in the third inning as Hess stranded two more runners. Fife hit a two-out double and came around to score on a single by Blantz to put Delaware up 5-0.
Three popouts got Hess through the fourth, then Hess stranded a runner at second to end the fifth.
Hess got two quick outs in the sixth, but two singles and a two-run double cut Delaware's lead to 5-2.
Delaware got both runs back in the sixth. Costaro walked and Lillie Scheivert hit a single to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch scored Lillie Scheivert and a passed ball scored Garber to put Delaware up 7-2.
Shank relieved Hess and got the final three puts on a foul out and two ground outs.

GAME NOTES

Delaware has won 30 for the seventh time in program history. They also did it in 2000 (36), 2013 (35), 2006 (33), 1999 (33), 2016 (30), 2015 (30).
Katie Scheivert has multiple hits in three of her last four games and has a hit in 10 of her last 12 games. She is hitting .405 over that stretch.
Katie Scheivert's three-hit game was her first this season and third of her career. She also did it twice last year on March 4 against Norfolk State and against Hofstra on April 28.
Shaffer has reached base in 14 consecutive games, tying her season best done from Feb. 17-March 16. It is also the second longest by a Delaware player this season (Costaro, 29).
Hess has won seven straight games. She has a 2.00 ERA in her last 13 games, nine starts, in 63 innings. She has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 19 of her 20 appearances and two earned or fewer in 14 of her 20 appearances.
Garber has stolen 10 consecutive bases since her last caught stealing.
Shank has a 2.10 ERA in her last five appearances, pitching 10 innings over that stretch.
