Softball Completes Blue Hen Invitational With Wins Over Morgan State and Quinnipiac

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball wrapped up their home-opening weekend and the Blue Hen Invitational with wins over Morgan State (8-0 in five innings) and Quinnipiac (4-1) on Saturday.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS VS MORGAN STATE
- Morgan Hess pitched five shutout innings with four strikeouts and just two hits and a walk allowed. She also had an RBI and run scored.Â
- Sydney Shaffer went 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored.Â
- Katie Scheivert and Chloe Blantz both went 2-for-3. Blantz scored a pair of runs and Scheivert scored one run.Â
- Gianna Costaro went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and scored a run.Â
- Veronica Diomede made a sensational diving catch in center field to turn a double play and had the game-ending double.Â
- Bridget Chapman recorded a pinch hit single.Â
- Billie Kerwood shined in the circle for the Blue Hens, throwing a complete game with just one run, two walks, and five hits allowed with seven strikeouts.Â
- Sorella Gallucci had a huge day with three RBIs, including a two-run triple for her first collegiate hit.
- Hess had two hits and two runs scored.Â
- Kristen Luzon recorded a pinch hit RBI double.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED VS MORGAN STATE
- Hess pitched a perfect first with two strikeouts.Â
- Scheivert and Blantz led off the bottom of the first with singles. Shaffer brought in Scheivert with a hit and Hess scored Blantz on a groundout to put UD up 2-0.Â
- A double play helped turned by a diving catch by Diomede and a strikeout got Hess through the second. She then pitched a 1-2-3 third with a strikeout.Â
- In the bottom of the third, Delaware loaded the bases on a single by Blantz, a walk by Shaffer, and Hess reached on an error. Costaro brought in two runs with a single, and Mary Beth Cahalan and Gallucci recorded back-to-back sacrifice flies to extend the lead to 6-0.Â
- Another double play in the fifth, turned by Graceyn Frost at first base, got Hess through five scoreless innings.Â
- Delaware scored two runs in the fifth to end the game. Shaffer and Chapman singled and Frost had a sacrifice fly for the seventh run. Diomede then hit a double in the right-center gap to give Delaware a win in five innings.Â
- Kerwood struck out two in the first two innings, allowing just one baserunner.Â
- Delaware scored in the bottom half of the second after Gallucci scored Costaro on a groundout.Â
- Quinnipiac tied the game with a triple in the third, but Kerwood stranded the go-ahead run with a strikeout.Â
- Gallucci delivered the big hit in the fourth with two outs. Costaro walked and Hess singled to set up a go-ahead two run triple for the freshman, her first collegiate hit.Â
- Kerwood responded with a perfect fifth inning with a strikeout. In the sixth, Quinnipiac loaded the bases with two outs, but Kerwood coaxed a groundout to end the threat.Â
- A two-out walk in the seventh was all Quinnipiac mustered in the seventh as Kerwood went the distance for the win.Â
GAME NOTES
- Gallucci recorded four RBIs between the two games, including the three against Quinnipiac.Â
- Hess pitched her first shutout of the season and third as a Blue Hen. She has 11 shutouts in her career.Â
- Blantz and Shaffer recorded their fourth multi-hit games of the season.Â
- Luzon is 4-for-7 with three RBIs as a pinch hitter this season, a year after hitting .500/.556/.792 as a pinch hitter.Â
- Chapman has pinch hit singles in two of her last three opportunities.Â
- Kerwood's complete game was her second of the season and 40th of her career.Â

- Tomorrow's games of the Blue Hen Invitational - Quinnipiac vs Morgan State, Quinnipiac vs Delaware - have been cancelled.
