Colonials Threaten Late, but Blue Hens Survive for Sixth Straight Victory

WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Washington University outscored the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team by four goals in the second period Saturday afternoon, but the Blue Hens were able to hold on for a 10-8 win.
Kateri LinvilleDelaware posted five of the game's first six goals within 11 minutes of opening draw en route to an 8-2 halftime advantage.
George Washington (4-4) came out of the break with a vengeance to score four unanswered goals to come within two at 8-6.
Sophomores Shannon Hawley (Camillus, N.Y.) and Casey Lyons (Georgetown, Ontario, Canada) pushed the UD lead to 10-6 with over 12 minutes left in the game, but the Colonials would not back down.
Rachel Mia cut the score to 10-7 with 11:08 to go while Lindsay Diantonio posted the game's final goal at 1:21.
Hawley led all scorers with her third hat trick of the season with three goals.
Senior Chelsea Fay (West Chester, Pa.) added two scores for the Hens classmate Abbie Hartman (Hatfield, Pa.) and Lyons each posted two points off of one goal and one assist.
Caitlin McCartneySenior Tori Zorovich (Massapequa, N.Y.) collected seven saves to move to 5-0 on the year for UD.
GW's Erin Long gave up eight goals while tallying three saves for the loss. Mia, Diantonio and Michaela Lynch all registered two goals for the Colonials.
“We are in a good position to be in at the end of non-conference play. George Washington made us work hard for today's win. It's a good gut check before we start conference action.”
Caitlin McCartney has tallied at least one point in 39 consecutive games.
· Chelsea Fay has scored at least one goal in 36 straight contests.
· Casey Lyons was held under five points for the first time in six games.
· Abby Wheble controlled a game-best and career-high four draws.
· Today's game was the first-ever matchup between the Delaware and George Washington women's lacrosse programs.
