Blue Hens Stun #16 Georgetown 17-5 in Snowy Season Opener

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women's lacrosse squad came out quickly Saturday in its 2015 season opener, scoring the first four goals of the game and storming past No. 16 Georgetown for a 17-5 non-league victory at snowy Delaware Stadium.
Delaware, which won its season opener for the first time since 2008, scored four times in the first seven minutes of the game, took a commanding 12-5 lead at halftime, and cruised to the victory as
six different Blue Hens netted multiple goal games.
The Hens (1-0) knocked off their highest ranked opponent since a 10-9 win over then No. 11 Loyola (Md.) back in 2013.
Caitlin McCartney scored four goals and had an assist, Casey Lyons recorded three goals and three assists, McKenzie Rafferty added three goals, and Kara Dattellas contributed three goals to lead the way for the Blue Hens.“It's always great to score and play well against a ranked opponent,” said Rafferty. “We played really well as a unit defensively, which is the only way you can hold a team like Georgetown to five goals.”
Delaware outshot Georgetown (0-1) by a 30-14 margin and took advantage of 19 Hoya turnovers.
Alex Zaugra (above) picked up the victory in goal as she notched five saves.Delaware will next be in action Tuesday when the Blue Hens travel to Easton, Pa. to take on Lafayette at 7 p.m. at Fisher Stadium.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
· Delaware's 12-goal margin of victory is the largest win for the Blue Hens since UD defeated Virginia Tech 17-3 last season.
· The victory over the Hokies also marked the last time the Hens scored at least 17 goals and held an opponent scoreless in a half.
· Saturday's win marked the first time in four all-time meetings that Delaware was able to defeat Georgetown.
