NEWARK, Del. -- Just five days after an 18-goal barrage resulted in a win over nationally-ranked Holy Cross, the University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad could not keep the offensive fireworks going and dropped an 11-7 decision to previously winless Binghamton Sunday at Delaware Stadium.
Binghamton (1-3) broke a late second quarter tie to take the lead into overtime and then outscored Delaware 4-1 in the pivotal third period on the way to the victory.
Sophomore midfielder Jackson Finigan (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlile HS/Deerfield Academy) netted his first career hat trick and finished with three goals and an assist to lead the Delaware
offense.
The Hens (3-4) also got two goals from freshman midfielder Will Hirschmann (Edgewater, Md./Archbishop Spalding/at left) while senior attackman Beau Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Academy) added a goal and an assist.
Delaware senior goalkeeper Brett Anton (Madison, N.J./Madison) recorded eight saves and senior Tyler Barbarich (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) won 8 of 12 faceoff attempts but it was not enough for the Blue Hens.
"We gave up some goals where we did a poor job executing on offense and they got some fast breaks," said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. "I'm extremely disappointed after our positive performance on Tuesday. The offense didn't do what they needed to do. We have to keep working on us. We took a step forward on Tuesday and took two steps backwards today. There's a lot of soul searching happening on the sideline right now. We're going to use this as a learning experience."
Binghamton (1-3), which snapped a five-game losing streak that dated back to last April, got five goals from attackman Paul O'Donnell while Tucker Nelson had a goal and six assists and JT Hauck scored twice and dished out an assist. Goalkeeper Tanner Cosens posted 14 saves and earned the win in his first start of the season for the Bearcats.
Delaware jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Finigan and Hirschmann in the first eight minutes of play. Binghamton answered with three straight goals, but the Hens eventually held a share of the lead again at 4-4 on a Finigan score with 8:17 left before halftime.
But Binghamton got a goal from Nelson with just 2:30 left in the half to take a 5-4 advantage into the break and then outscored the Hens 4-1 in the third quarter with O'Donnell scoring twice.
Delaware narrowed the gap to 9-7 early in the fourth quarter as Finigan scored a goal and fed Jones for another with 10:59 left to play, but the Hens would not score again and O'Donnell sealed the deal with two more scores over the final 7:42.
