NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball squad returned home for the first time in nearly a month Saturday afternoon but the Blue Hens couldn't keep up with the long distance shooting of James Madison and dropped a 73-63 decision in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (5-8, 0-2 CAA), who suffered their fifth straight setback, lost for the first time in four
outings at home this season as they returned to their homecourt for the first time since a 67-58 win over South Florida way back on Dec. 3.
Delaware sophomore guard Anthony Mosley recorded his first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, junior guard Cazmon Hayes (at left) added a team-high 17 points and added eight rebounds, and senior forward Marvin King-Davis (below right) added nine points and five rebounds.
While the Blue Hens were shooting just 31.7 percent from the field (19 of 60) for the game, James Madison was bombing away successfully from three-point range as the Dukes (11-4, 1-1 CAA) converted on 13 of 32 attempts (40.6 percent) from long range.
“I thought our effort defensively was good, we took care of the ball and we hit our free throws, but you have to be able to score the ball,” Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross said. “For us to shoot 5 of 29 in the first half in our own building put us in too deep of a hole. The second half was much better, but we just couldn't make up that deficit. We just have to keep fighting."
James Madison downed the Hens for the third straight time and for the fourth time in the last five visits to Delaware.
Guard Jackson Kent led the JMU assault with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds while
backcourt mate Ron Curry contributed 17 points and Winston Grays III came off the bench to add 13 points - all in the opening half.
Delaware fell behind 35-20 at halftime due to a dismal shooting display that saw the Blue Hens hit just 5 of 29 shots from the field (17.2 percent), including 0 for 11 shooting from the three-point line. JMU countered with 8 for 19 three-point shooting in the opening 20 minutes led by Kent and Grays, who each had three treys and combined for 25 points at the break.
The Blue Hens got the margin down to 11 points three times in the second half, including 61-50 with 4:34 left but could never get closer.
