NEWARK, Del. – Statistical contributions came from across the board as No. rv/-- Delaware moved to 2-0 on the year with a 17-7 victory over George Washington in the home opener at Delaware Stadium Tuesday.
The Hens held a slight 8-6 lead at halftime before outscoring the Colonials, 9-1, in the second half. Both teams scored within the first two minutes of the second, but Delaware scored eight unanswered goals to bring home the win.
Senior Casey Lyons (at left; Georgetown, Ontario, Canada/Berkshire) posted her 13th career hat trick and finished the night with five points while junior Jamie Schwartz (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) notched her second career hat trick with a career-high-tying four goals.
Seniors Shannon Hawley (below left; Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and Kara Dattellas (below right; Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) joined junior Coley Ricci (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) in registering two goals apiece. Hawley and Dattellas each also added two assists for Delaware.
Defensively, junior Mary Abram (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline) logged a career-best game with four groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Sophomore Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) tied a career-high with four draw controls while junior Kirsten Hale (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) picked up three.
Sophomore Taylor Carpentier (Garden City
, N.Y./Garden City) came in off the bench to tally three saves for the win.
Gabbi Hull and Bailey Forcier each recorded two goals for the Colonials (0-1) while Cassidy Shollenberger had a goal and assist. Olivia Boudreau also dished out two assists for GW.
“At halftime, we needed to win the draw, use our speed in transition and get fast break opportunities. We needed to let the ball do the work for scoring opportunities. Defensively, we needed to step up, body up and do our jobs as a unit by not giving up groundballs and second chances. We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but we battled back and eventually separated ourselves. I was happy with the overall team performance.”
Junior Coley Ricci
“We had emotion, were patient, made our cuts and were working off of each other's flow. We are in a good spot, but there's always room for improvement. We will take the next couple of days to practice, work hard and get ready for Penn.”
Junior Jamie Schwartz
“I think we have a really unselfish offense. Everyone wants to move the ball and keep her head up. In the first half, we needed to get a little rust out, but in the second half we really came out and proved ourselves. We can't let down.”
