Hens Halted at No. 13/14 Penn, 12-10

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Delaware was unable to capitalize on a late rally as No. 13/14 Penn picked up the 12-10 victory over the Hens Saturday afternoon at historic Franklin Field.
The Blue Hens trailed by four at 12-7 with 17:32 remaining in regulation before scoring three unanswered goals to bring the score to 12-10 with 4:31 on the clock.
Kateri LinvilleSenior Kara Dattellas (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) posted a balanced game with a team-high three draw controls to go along with four points (1g, 3a) and one groundball.
Junior Kirsten Hale (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) led Delaware (2-1) with her first career hat trick and finished the game with three goals and one caused turnover.
The Hens also saw multiple-goal games from senior Casey Lyons (Georgetown, Ontario, Canada/Berkshire) and junior Jamie Schwartz (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), who each registered two goals. Lyons added an assist for three points.
Senior Ali Karwoski (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) grabbed a team-best three groundballs in the loss.
Sophomore Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) earned her second start of the year to notch five saves.
Lely DeSimone posted a hat trick for Penn (1-0) with three goals while Nina Corcoran and Caroline Cummings collected two apiece. Corcoran added four assists for a total of six points. Britt Brown was credited with the win with nine saves in the cage.
“We competed today, but learned the tough lesson of needing to execute in pressure situations. We will use this game to continue to get better.”
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· The Blue Hens have had at least six players tally a goal in each of its two games so far this season.
· Shannon Hawley hit 100 career points with a goal in the first half. The senior now has 100 points on 80 goals and 20 assists. She is the 31st player in Delaware history to reach the century mark.
· Jamie Schwartz upped her team-high point-scoring streak to 10 and goal-scoring streak to eight.
· The Blue Hens are currently receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse Weekly Poll.
· Penn held advantages in groundballs (16-8) and draw controls (15-9).
