NEWARK, Del. – It was once again a complete team effort Tuesday evening with nine Blue Hens tallying at least one point as Delaware defeated La Salle, 12-7, at Delaware Stadium.
La Salle scored first, but the Hens (3-1) countered with nine of the game's next 10 goals. The Explorers (0-2) made a late run, but the Delaware defense was able to hold on for victory.
Senior Casey Lyons (Georgetown, Ontario, Canada/Berkshire) registered four points on two goals and two assists while junior Jamie Schwartz (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) collected three points on two goals and an assist. Senior Shannon Hawley (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and junior Kirsten Hale (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) also recorded two goals apiece.
Junior captain Coley Ricci (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) posted a solid game with three caused turnovers, three groundballs and three draw controls to go along with an assist.
Sophomore Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) added a game-high four draw controls while senior Erin Wein (Middletown, Md./Middletown) collected three groundballs and four caused turnovers.
Sophomore Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) moved to 3-1 on the year in the cage with six saves.
Allee Ilgenfritz led La Salle with four points on two goals and two assists while Allie Burnett contributed a goal and two assists for three points of her own. Lucy Loughlin finished the night with three saves.
“There was a lot of adjusting tonight and I don't think either team really got into a rhythm or flow. We talk a lot about being able to play through adversity, whether it's your best day or your worst day. We found a way to win and we did it in the Delaware fashion that we want to with a double-digit score and multiple offensive threats. I don't think this was our most consistent or best game of the year, but it's February. There's still another level in us.”
Senior Casey Lyons
“It was a long, sloppy game, but it's great to get our second win at home. Everyone is on the same page and we've put together a great team effort. We have multiple offensive threats this season, which allows us to look for the different options, and tonight was no different. Defenses can't shut down just one player because someone else will step up.”
