NEWARK, Del. – Senior Casey Lyons (Georgetown, Ontario, Canada/Berkshire) logged seven points for the second straight game Saturday afternoon as Delaware topped Monmouth, 14-11, at Delaware Stadium.
The Blue Hens (7-1) have now won five straight and are also 5-0 at home this season. MU falls to 4-4 on the year.
Lyons, who tallied six assists and a goal on Wednesday, collected a season-best five goals with two assists against the Hawks. Three of her goals came from the eight-meter line. The attacker added a groundball and caused turnover in the win.
Delaware held a 10-5 lead at halftime before Monmouth opened the second half with a spark. The Hawks scored four straight goals and cut the score to 10-9 with 13:40 on the clock. UD countered with four of the game's next six scores, including a tally from Lyons with four seconds remaining in regulation for the 14-11 final.
Senior Shannon Hawley (at left; Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) notched her first hat trick of the season and ninth of her career with three goals in addition to an assist, two groundballs and a caused turnover against the Hawks.
Junior Jamie Schwartz (below right; Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) continued her offensive prowess with two goals to up her goal-scoring streak to 15 and point-scoring streak to 13 since last season.
Defensively, seniors Ali Karwoski (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and Erin Wein (Middletown, Md./Middletown) led Delaware with three groundballs and three caused turnovers, respectively.
Sophomore Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) also moved to 7-1 on the year while accumulating five saves.
Kateri Linville“We knew Monmouth was a tough team. They gave us a good game and competed from start to finish. I don't think we made stops as well today or finished as well as we could have and there were then some spurts where Monmouth made some plays and gained momentum. You can never count someone out when they start to gain the momentum. I was happiest with our ability to come out of a few timeouts and make the adjustments needed. We were able to maintain our composure on the homestretch on the attack when we needed possession.”
Senior Casey Lyons
“Their goalie [Caroline Huelster] played great and we needed to change up our shots when she was able to save everything in the second half. We were able to figure it out after we changed up our shots and moved the ball around. We worked on what was going to stop balls at practice, so I focused on that and it all worked out in the end.”
