HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Delaware rebounded from a seven-goal deficit Sunday afternoon to defeat Hofstra, 14-13, in overtime at James M. Shuart Stadium for its first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season.
Down 7-0 within the first 21 minutes, the Blue Hens scored four straight goals to go into the halftime break down just 7-4. Delaware gradually fought back into it in the second half before goals from senior Shannon Hawley (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and junior Coley Ricci (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) brought UD within one at 13-12 with 51 seconds remaining.
Hawley tied the game with 12 ticks left on the clock to give the Hens their third overtime appearance in the last five games.
Junior Jamie Schwartz (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), the team's leading goal scorer, notched the game-winner just over a minute into the extra period to make the comeback complete.
Hawley, who reached the 100-goal mark of her four-year career, and Ricci led all Blue Hens with four goals apiece. Hawley added two groundballs, a draw control and caused turnover while Ricci collected three groundballs and a draw control in the win.
Senior Kara Dattellas (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) picked up four points and three goals to go along with a draw control.
Defensively, senior Erin Wein (Middletown, Md./Middletown) caused two Hofstra turnovers while sophomore Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) logged seven eight saves in the cage.
With the win, Delaware snaps a five-game losing streak and improves to 9-6 on the year and 1-3 in league play.
The Pride's Lindsay Scott led all scorers with five goals and two assists while Carolyn Carrera controlled eight draws. Alexis Greene was credited with the loss after accumulating eight saves.
“This was a pure team win. We played with guts, grit and the will to win.”
Senior Shannon Hawley
“We needed this win. The first half was rough and it has been the past few games we've played in. We knew we had to fight back as conference games are always a battle. We've lost too many overtime and one-goal games and we've worked too hard to let it happen again.”
[On scoring 100th career goal]: “It feels awesome to reach such a plateau and it's even better to have done it in a game like today. I have to give all the credit to my teammates as they really made this possible. I owe it all to them for all of the hard work we've put in in practice and on gameday.”
