NEWARK, Del. – The Blue Hens grabbed the momentum early and never let go Friday evening as Delaware defeated James Madison, 12-8, at Delaware Stadium.
The win halted an eight-game losing streak to the Dukes, is the first over JMU since 2009 and the first-ever at Delaware Stadium since the Hens began play there in 2011.
Senior Casey Lyons (Georgetown, Ontario, Canada/Berkshire) led the Blue Hens (10-6, 2-3 CAA) with her fourth hat trick of the season by notching three goals and an assist. All of her goals came in the first half and included her milestone 100th career tally at 9:02 in addition to a show-stopping over-the-shoulder, behind-the-back goal at 1:50.
Junior Jamie Schwartz (at left; Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) tied a career-high with a season-best four assists while also posting a goal of her own.
Senior Shannon Hawley (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and junior Coley Ricci (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) contributed two goals and an assist apiece in the win.
Defensively, sophomore Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) stopped nine JMU shots for her 10th win of her debut season with the Hens.
Kateri Linville“This was a great team performance and I'm really proud of these ladies. This was a must-win game at home and we know that we are capable of playing like we did today. Our seniors stepped up when our backs were against the wall at Hofstra and they did it again today. We had to take their lead and represent them because beating JMU was on their to-do list.”
Senior Casey Lyons
“We came out knowing that we needed this win. It's a great feeling as this senior class has never beaten JMU and it also helps keep our CAA Tournament hopes alive. We need to continue to take it one game at a time and no team in the CAA is a team to overlook. The CAA is always a dogfight.”
Junior Jamie Schwartz
“We're trying to keep CAA Tournament hopes alive for our seniors. We needed this win today. We've done a really good job of taking things game-by-game this season and we're not overlooking any opponent.”
