HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader to sixth-ranked James Madison, 8-0 and 6-5, Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Dukes (39-3, 14-0 CAA) opened the scoring in the first game when Kassie Brammer scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning, before putting the game away with six runs the following frame.
Megan Good tripled home the first run of the rally, while RBI singles by Taylor Newton and Jessica Mrozek made it a 4-0 game. Hannah Hayes then drove home a run with a bunt, before a pair of bases loaded walks capped the Dukes' scoring in the frame. Jailyn Ford opened the bottom of the fifth with a home run to centerfield, ending the game due to the mercy rule.
JMU pitcher Megan Good allowed just two singles in the five inning shutout, while Blue Hen starter Carolyn Szymanski dropped to 10-8 as she gave up eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits in four frames.
Delaware (26-16, 8-6 CAA) struck first in the nightcap as Lisa Stacevicz singled with one out in the top of the second, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shelby Jones, and scored when Alyshia Dellatore laced a double to rightfield. After Dellatore moved to third on a bunt single by Mattie Nuccio, she stole home to give the Blue Hens a two-run advantage.
However JMU answered back in the bottom of the third, as Ford delivered an RBI single before Newton belted a two-run homer to put the Dukes in front, 3-2. Hayes blasted a solo shot in the fourth before JMU added an unearned run in the fifth to increase its lead to three.
Delaware would rally in the top of the seventh, as walks to Dellatore, Nuccio and Leanna Gearhart loaded the bases with one out. Nuccio was forced at the plate on a groundball hit by Gabby Klecko for the second out, but Mariah Kondravy then reached on Dukes error, allowing Hannah George to score and make it a 5-3 game. Anna Steinmetz followed by drilling a two-run single to center, pulling the Blue Hens even at 5-5.
However JMU quickly countered in the bottom of the seventh, as Good led off with a triple before intentional walks to Ford and Newton loaded the bases with nobody out. UD pitcher Jordan Cargile then hit Niki Prince with a pitch, forcing home pinch runner Jenny Behan with the winning run.
The Blue Hens and Dukes will conclude their weekend series on Sunday with a single game beginning at 2 p.m.
