NEWARK, Del. – The Hens returned to Delaware Stadium for the first time in three weeks Sunday afternoon, but the results were not in their favor as No. 11/13 Princeton defeated No. --/rv UD by a score of 7-6.
The Blue Hens, who were previously 5-0 on their home turf, have now lost three straight, all to nationally ranked opponents and all by just one goal.
Down 6-1 at one point, Delaware (8-4) rattled off five unanswered goals to tie the game at 6-6 with 10:01 remaining in regulation. The Tigers' leading scorer, Olivia Hompe, netted the game-winner, her lone tally of the game, with 5:22 left on the clock.
The Hens had multiple opportunities to take the lead after posting nine shots (three on goal) in the final five minutes of action. The Princeton defense held tough
however as the Tigers (7-2) held on for victory.
Senior Shannon Hawley (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) led UD with her second hat trick of the season and finished with a season-high four goals to go along with two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Classmate Casey Lyons (at left; Georgetown, Ontario, Canada/Berkshire) returned to play for the Hens after missing two contests with an injury and registered two goals and a groundball.
Sophomore Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and junior Kirsten Hale (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) each collected three groundballs and two draw controls in the loss.
Sophomore Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) logged three saves with seven goals allowed in the cage.
Kateri Linville“We got off to a slower start than we wanted to. We have a team that put their heart and soul into that second half and gave it everything they could. Unfortunately we didn't convert in the home stretch and we came up short, which just leaves a pit in your gut. I'm really proud of how the team fought back and I continue to be really impressed with their inspired play regardless of whatever adversity we face.”
Senior Shannon Hawley
“We have to take this as another learning opportunity. We executed the plays well, but our shots were off. We've come back against quality opponents in Stony Brook, Towson and now Princeton and we'll use these losses to continue to push ourselves. Although we didn't come up with the win we wanted, we fought hard.”
