NEWARK, Del. -- UD freshman guard Ryan Daly scored 27 points while the Blue Hens used a late run to take control as the Delaware men's basketball team picked up its first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season with a 69-62 triumph over Northeastern Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware, which avenged a 36-point loss to Northeastern two weeks ago, snapped a six-game losing
skid while improving to 8-12 overall and 1-6 in league play.
The Huskies, who dropped their second straight following an eight-game winning streak, fell to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
The teams were tied 49-49 with 6:48 remaining following a three-pointer by the Huskies' Alex Murphy, but the Blue Hens took control from there by scoring the next nine points.
Eric Carter (below) opened the spurt by hitting three of four free throws, and after Daly buried a three-pointer, Anthony Mosley added a foul shot before Carter knocked down a pair from the line to make it a 58-49 game with 2:48 to play.
T.J. Williams answered with two free throws for Northeastern, but Daly countered with two of his own before drilling a deep triple to put the Blue Hens up 63-51 at the 2:02 mark, and Delaware was not threatened from there.
“We got into a good rhythm tonight, with Ryan (Daly) running the point,” Delaware head coach Martin Ingelsby said. “He's such a competitor, and it rubs off on the rest of the group. Eric (Carter) is a key guy for us, we got him back in the starting lineup and he was able to produce tonight. I thought our physicality on the defensive end in the beginning of the game was very important. We're confident in this building; we compete and believe we can win here.”
Daly posted his fifth 20-point effort of the season for the Blue Hens, who ended a three-game home losing skid. Cazmon Hayes (above) added 13 points and a career-high four blocks, while Carter
reached double figures for the first time since the season opener by scoring 11 points thanks largely to a 9 of 11 performance from the foul line.
Delaware shot 44.0 percent from the field, finished 17 of 22 from the charity stripe, and held a slim 33-32 edge on the glass.
Williams, who entered the night leading the CAA by averaging 21.4 points per game, scored a game-high 28 points, but no other Northeastern player finished in double figures. The Huskies, who hit a school-record 21 three-pointers against the Blue Hens on Jan. 5 in Boston, shot 42.6 percent from the floor and connected on 9 of 23 shots from behind the arc.
The Blue Hens got off to a slow start, as Northeastern scored the first eight points of the game before Darian Bryant finally put Delaware on the board with a jumper at the 12:28 mark of the opening half.
However UD then hit 10 of its next 12 shots from the field, using a 13-0 run to surge in front 23-14 with six minutes to play in the period. Northeastern rallied within a point, before a driving layup by Daly gave Delaware a 28-25 lead heading into the break.
The Huskies used an 11-2 spurt early in the second half to take a 38-32 advantage, but Delaware scored 10 consecutive points to go back in front 46-41 on a Daly three-pointer. Northeastern fought back to knot the game at 49-49, before the Blue Hens' nine-point decisive run made the difference.
“This was a great team win,” Daly said. “We knew they were going to go on a run in the second half but we battled back, finished possessions and came away with the win.”
