NEWARK, Del. – Junior midfielder Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) exploded for a career-high six goals Saturday afternoon as Delaware defeated Georgetown, 10-9, in the season lid-lifter for both squads at Delaware Stadium.
Gohsler, who previously never tallied more than three goals in a game, added three ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover in the win.
Senior midfielder Kirsten Hale (below right; Malvern, Pa./Greta Valley) registered her third career hat trick while classmate Jamie Schwartz (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) posted UD's other goal on the afternoon.
Senior co-captain Coley Ricci (at left; Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) led Delaware with four draw controls and two assists.
The back and forth affair featured four lead changes and six ties before Gohsler notched the game-winning goal with 4:31 remaining in regulation.
Junior goalie Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) collected three saves with four ground balls and four caused turnovers in 60 minutes for the Blue Hens.
Taylor Gebhart led the Hoyas with five points on two goals and three assists while Morgan Ryan recorded a hat trick of three goals. Maddy Fisher was credited with the loss despite making 14 saves.
“I thought that today was the battle of the unknowns. Both teams are really young with some established returning players, but a lot of unknowns. That brought a lot of enthusiasm to our team to come out and really compete against a similar opponent. I was particularly impressed with us winning the little battles with draws, ground balls and turnovers. The energy of our entire team was really there today and I thought our bench was amazing. This was a great team effort and a huge win to start the year.”
Junior Midfielder Becky Gohsler
“It's a huge confidence booster to start the year 1-0. There is so much stuff we can work on from today's game and to be able to come out with the win is really encouraging. Going into the game, we didn't know what to expect. I didn't know how our attack was going to match up to the defense. I tried to take what they gave me and really improvise, but once we really moved the defense we found our
opportunities.”
