Blue Hens Drop Series Finale At Liberty, 11-0

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sometimes life throws adversity your way so that you're prepared for what's coming down the road.
That's exactly what the University of Delaware baseball team is facing in the early part of 2019 as the Blue Hens dropped the series finale against a tough Liberty squad, 11-0, on a cold Sunday afternoon.
"Right now, we're just struggling a bit. We've just had some lapses defensively at key moments that have opened up the flood gates in the early part of this year. We had maybe five or six innings this weekend that we didn't make good baseball decisions and it cost us. You can't give good teams extra opportunities," head coach Jim Sherman said. "This group is a hard-working group and we'll continue to work and improve each time we take the field."
Sophomore Chris Ludman kept the Blue Hens within striking distance for the early part of the game, tossing six strong innings, while striking out six and walking none.
Senior co-captain Kevin Mohollen led the six-hit offensive attack with two of his own, including one of Delaware's two doubles on the day.
"I thought Chris threw the ball really well for us. He battled and you can see that with the six strikeouts and no walks," Sherman added. "Kevin had a good day at the plate with the two hits, but as a team, I thought we just couldn't put things together at the right time."
Liberty got things started in the first two batters of the game with a triple and RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead. That's where they would stay as Ludman shut them down over the next three-plus frames.
Delaware would get runners on in the second, third and fourth, but was unable to plate any runs off the Flames' starter.
Two miscues by the Blue Hens would prove costly in the fifth as Liberty put up five in the frame to push its lead to 5-0.
Mohollen laced a one-out double in the sixth, but the Blue Hens rally would be cut short.
Liberty added three in the seventh and three in the eighth to pull away with the win.
