Blue Hens Win Wild Mid-Week Tilt Over Lehigh, 12-11

A game filled with big innings, unorthodox plays and timely hits ended with the University of Delaware pulling out a 12-11 victory over Lehigh. The Blue Hens now face Rider next Tuesday for a chance to reach the Liberty Bell finals for the second consecutive year.
"Today was a win and we'll take it. It wasn't the prettiest of baseball games and we surely didn't play our best baseball and had a really rough eighth inning, but I'm proud of the fight and resiliency we showed in bouncing back and getting the big hit and doing enough to come away with the win," head coach Jim Sherman said.
Offensively, sophomore Zach Lesher had a career day, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and the game-winning RBI. Senior Vinny Vaccone and sophomore Zack Miller each had two hits with Vaccone scoring two runs and Miller driving in two. Freshman Joseph Carpenter extended his streak of reaching base safely to 15 games, along with driving in a team-high three RBIs on the day.
On the mound, Jack Dubecq, Joey Silan and Ari Silverstein all had scoreless outings, with Silverstein picking up the win out of the bullpen for the Blue Hens.
"I thought we had some really timely hitting today with big at-bats from Carpenter and Miller, along with a great overall day from Lesher that really got us going from the bottom of the order," Sherman added. "Although the score doesn't necessarily show it, I thought we had some good outings on the mound from Dubecq, Silan and Silverstein."
Delaware would take an early lead in the bottom of the first, scratching out a run on a walk and a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead.
Lehigh answered with runs in the third and fourth, but Austin Colmery responded with an RBI double in the home half of the fourth to even the score at 2-2.
The Mountainhawks would plate two in the fifth to grab a 4-2 lead before Delaware opened the floodgates in the sixth.
Lesher got it started with a one-out double and four pitches later, Brad Kaden ripped a single into left field to score the first run of the inning. A walk and a Lehigh error would load the bases for Jordan Hutchins. Hutchins delivered with an RBI single to even the score at 4-4.
On the next pitch, Carpenter launched a double to deep center field to clear the bases and give Delaware a 7-4 advantage. An RBI single from Jack Goan and a two-RBI single from Miller would plate three more runs and extend the Blue Hens lead to 10-4 after six complete.
Delaware would add to the lead in the seventh with an RBI groundout from Hutchins to make it 11-4 before Lehigh responded in the eighth.
The Mountainhawks would draw five walks and knock out four hits in the eight en route to a seven-run frame and a tie-game at 11-11.
Vaccone would answer right back, lacing the third pitch of the bottom of the eighth down the right field line for a triple. Three batters later, Lesher would drop a single into short centerfield to plate the eventual game-winning run.
Silverstein would pitch around a one-out double in the top of the ninth to earn his first collegiate save.
