Blue Hens Drop Series Opener At Northeastern, 13-4

The Blue Hens were dealt another obstacle on Friday when their junior starter Brandon Walter was knocked out of the game in the third inning with a line drive and the Huskies of Northeastern took advantage en route to a 13-4 victory in the series opener.
"This was just a tough game for us. When you have your top arm knocked out early, it takes the wind out of you a bit and Northeastern took advantage of it. They are a really good club that never makes it easy on you and we weren't able to bounce back after Walt had to leave the game," head coach Jim Sherman said.
Five different Blue Hens had hits on the day with freshman Joseph Carpenter extending his streak to 15 straight games reaching base safely with a two-RBI double for Delaware's big hit on the day. Senior Vinny Vaccone laced his first homerun of the season in the contest.
Walter tossed 2.1 innings before taking a line drive off the arm and being forced out of the game. Derek Wakeley, Winston Allen, Justin Tomovich, Joey Haas and Andrew Avots came out of the pen to finish the game for the Blue Hens.
"We need to regroup and get a good start from Ludman tomorrow to try and even the series against a good Northeastern club," Sherman added.
The Huskies jumped out early, scoring a run in the first and then put up a big inning in the third, including a grand slam en route to a 7-0 lead after four innings.
Northeastern added another run in the fifth, but Delaware responded in the sixth with singles from Kevin Mohollen and Erik Bowren, followed by an RBI groundout by Jordan Hutchins and the two-out, two-RBI double from Carpenter to make it an 8-3 game.
The Huskies responded with four in their half of the sixth, before Vaccone ripped his HR in the ninth to finalize the scoring.
