Blue Hens Drop 19-10 Decision to #15 Villanova
2/29/2020 2:30:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
NEWARK, Del. – With winds of over 20 mph and wind chills below 30 degrees, playing at Delaware Stadium on Saturday wasn't exactly an easy task. Add in a top-15 ranked opponent and it gets even tougher.
The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team faced all those elements with #15 Villanova visiting Newark and the Wildcats lived up to the billing, defeating the Blue Hens 19-10.
Senior Charlie Kitchen, sophomore Tye Kurtz and freshman Michael Robinson all had hat tricks on the afternoon, with Kitchen and Kurtz also adding two assists a piece. Sophomore Clay Miller added a goal and an assist for the Blue Hens.
Delaware caused 13 turnovers on the afternoon, with Kurtz, Owen Grant and Jason Seiter each tallying two apiece on the day.
"Credit to Villanova for coming in and challenging us in every facet of the game. We knew coming in that this was one of the better teams we'd see this year and they made us pay," head coach Ben DeLuca said. "We have to learn from this and use this to help us get better as we prepare for the rest of our schedule."
The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of action, but goals from Kitchen and Kurtz got the Blue Hens right back in it at 3-2.
Villanova would push the lead to 7-3, but Delaware would respond once again with goals from Miller and Robinson to get within 7-5 with 10 minutes to play in the second half.
The Blue Hens would then draw a penalty to go man-up, but were unable to capitalize, and that's when Villanova went on its run.
In the nine minutes left until halftime, the Wildcats scored six times, pushing their lead to 13-5 at the break.
Kitchen and Kurtz would each get two goals after the break, but it wasn't enough as Villanova secured the 19-10 decision.
