NEWARK, Del. – Delaware softball swept the opening day of its 2021 season, beating UMass 18-0 and Saint Joseph's 5-2 Sunday at the Delaware Softball Diamond.
After 364 days since their last game, and 673 since their last home game, the Blue Hens improved to 2-0. The Minutewomen fell to 0-1, while the Hawks dropped to 1-3.
Senior Sarah Piening picked up the win in the circle for Delaware against UMass, throwing three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Sophomore Emily Winburn was the winner against Saint Joseph's, striking out eight batters across five and two thirds innings. Junior Kailey Christian earned the save against the Hawks, firing a scoreless inning and a third.
Delaware opened the scoring against the Minutewomen in the second inning, when senior Chayanna Gallardo scored on a wild pitch, and a Julz Garber RBI groundout brought home Grace Hrustich.
The Blue Hens blew the game open in the third, scoring six runs on errors, wild pitches and passed balls by UMass. Junior Brittney Mendoza capped off the nine-run inning with a two-run homer over the centerfield fence.
Delaware tacked on seven more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run inside-the-park home run from freshman Lexi Moore.
The Blue Hens took the lead in the second inning against the Hawks when freshman Emily Blum doubled home junior Brooke Glanden. After St. Joe's tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth, Mendoza gave the lead back to Delaware when she grounded out to first and the throw home bounced off her helmet, allowing Julz Garber and Moore to score.
Delaware added an insurance run later in the inning when junior Hanna Garber sprinted home after Glanden reached on an error. SJU cut the lead to 4-2 in the sixth, but an RBI single from Julz Garber in the bottom of the frame re-established the three-run lead.
The Blue Hens are home again on Wednesday, March 10 when they host Coppin State for a single game at 3 p.m.
