Sheehan Fires Shutout, Mendoza Homers in Blue Hens’ 1-0 Win over Villanova

NEWARK, Del. – Blue Hen freshman lefthander Delani Sheehan fired a four-hit shutout while Brittney Mendoza belted a home run as the Delaware softball team defeated Villanova, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon.
Mendoza accounted for the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when she blasted a 1-1 pitch over the fence in leftcenter for her fifth home run of the year.
Sheehan made the lead stand up by firing three consecutive scoreless frames from there to post her second shutout of the season. The Wildcats put two runners on base in the sixth inning, before Sheehan retired Julia DaCosta on a foul popup to escape the jam.
Villanova's Ally Jones doubled with one down in the seventh, but Sheehan struck out Tess Cites swinging and retired Dani Dabroski on a groundout to seal the win.
Sheehan improved to 5-2 after allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out five. In addition to Mendoza's homer, Brooke Glanden added two hits and Karolina Flores had one for the Blue Hens.
