CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 17 Delaware field hockey team fell 3-1Â to No. 8 Virginia despite having a 19-7 shot advantage on Sunday afternoon.Â
Virginia got on the board early, scoring in the first four minutes of the game. The Cavaliers scored once more in the first period to take a 2-0 advantage.Â
The Blue Hens answered back in the second to trim the deficit to one, 2-1. Grace Hoepfner sent in a long feed above the 23-meter line to Kiki Oudshoorn, who netted her second goal in as many games.Â
After a scoreless third period, Virginia scored on a corner with 10 minutes remaining in the game to give them a 3-1 lead.Â
Delaware returns to action on Friday to host American at 5 p.m. in the home opener at Rullo Stadium.
THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAN DE KERKHOF
"Opening weekend is in the books and looking back at our performance we can be proud of the fight, the heart, and the drive this team presented in both games. We have gotten better by competing against Old Dominion and Virginia. Today's final score allows us to take away that net time we need to play the first quarter the way we played the remaining three quarters. We dug ourselves a hole being 2-0 down after the first 15 minutes but regrouped and rebounded for most of the rest of the game. Talented and young sums up our weekend evaluation which is a great position to be in as we will further develop our talent and become more experienced as the season goes on. This is a special team and we can be excited about what the future could hold for Delaware field hockey." -- Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
