NEWARK, Del. – For the fifth time this season, the University of Delaware volleyball team has played in five-set thrillers but came up short this time (23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-27, 9-15) to Stony Brook (9-10, 4-6 CAA) Sunday afternoon inside Bob Carpenter Center. The loss moves the Blue Hens to an 11-7 record on the season and 7-3 mark in conference play.
Delaware's strongest showing was in the third set, hitting at a .311 clip before closing out the afternoon with a .173 attacking percentage, compared to Stony Brook's .236. The Blue Hens led the way in points (81-79), blocks (10-2) and digs (104-99) while the Seawolves held the edge in kills (71-67), aces (6-4) and assists (65-60).
After dropping set one to the Seawolves, the Blue Hens turned it around in set two and three. Set two proved to be a battle of the advantage where both teams held a narrow lead. Leanna Deegan checked into the match at a critical time and buried back-to-back kills to kickstart a brief 4-1 spurt for Delaware build a four-point cushion, 19-15. Stony Brook roared back scoring four-straight to make it a 19-all set. Eileen Gex connected with hot hand Deegan to ignite a much-needed 6-2 for the Blue Hens to claim the 25-21 set two win.
Although set three was played close, it was still lit up in favor of the Blue and Gold. With the scoreboard showing the set tied at 17, a Seawolve service error followed by a Savannah Seemans ace helped the Blue Hens hold on to the lead for good and close out by scoring eight of the set's 13 points for the 25-22 set three victory.
The tightly contested match continued heading into set four, where the fans saw eight ties and four lead changes. Stony Brook held the 22-20 lead after Kali Moore's kill and then Lily Rogers set Lani Mason up to nail one down as part of Delaware's 4-1 spurt, 24-23. The Seawolves tied the set again at 24 before Seemans finished off Rogers' feed, 25-24. Stony Brook responded by scoring three-straight (27-25) to push the match to five.
The Blue Hens capitalized off of a pair of attacking errors to take the early 2-0 lead. The Seawovles then turned up the intensity by putting together a 14-4 run (14-6). Delaware was determined to keep the match alive with scoring three unanswered points before Lauren Schmitz buried point 15 to secure the win for Stony Brook.
Mason paced Delaware with 23 kills and 16 digs to post her ninth double-double on the season. Johnson followed with 11 kills and five blocks.
