PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Delaware women's lacrosse team (0-2) fell to No. 20 Penn (1-0), 15-4, Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.
With snow squalls, wind gusts, and the temperature dropping, the Blue Hens got off to a slow start. The Quakers, however, started off hot, scoring three unanswered goals to end the first quarter. Delaware compiled four ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers in the first.
Penn then had another surge of energy, scoring seven in the second quarter. The Quakers shut out the Blue Hens in the first half, holding a 10 goal lead to start the third quarter. Penn then scored two more goals in the beginning of the third.
Sydni Rosa was able to get on the board first for the Blue Hens, driving straight through the eight meter, bringing the score to 12-1. The Quakers added two more goals to end the third period.
The Blue Hens finally hit their stride, netting three straight goals in the fourth period. Freshman Halen Saroney scored her first collegiate goal, dodging around her defender in the right wing of the eight to make the score 14-2.
Rosa netted her second goal of the game on a free position shot, driving in from the far left hash. Danika Swech scored the Blue Hens' final goal of the game on an assist from Delaney McDaniel. With under 10 seconds left on the clock, Penn scored one last time to make the final score, 15-4.
Penn outshot Delaware 34-18, had a 14-8 advantage in draw controls and 19-17 edge in ground balls. Meghan Johnson had four draw controls, while Maddie Maio had three caused turnovers and scooped up one ground ball.
