DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 17 Delaware men's lacrosse team brought intensity and grit to their matchup today at No. 7 Duke (5-1), but it was not enough as the Blue Hens (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season, 19-14, this afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
Tye Kurtz led off the scoring for the Blue Hens with a sweet goal that knocked the Blue Devils back a little. Slightly bothered by Delaware scoring first, Duke rattled off three straight goals to take a 3-1 advantage.
JP Ward was active once again on offense for the Blue Hens. He broke up the Blue Devils' streak with a goal at the 10:24 mark and another with 7:38 left in the first.
Duke held a 7-3 lead after the first quarter, but the second quarter belonged to the Blue Hens. Delaware closed the second quarter on a 3-0 run sparked by a Mike Robinson goal from about 10 yards out. Ward collected his hat trick and Kurtz added his second goal of the game to close in on Duke and trim the home team's lead to two goals.
Duke struck first in the third quarter, but one minute later, great ball movement by Delaware saw passes from Matt Kilkeary to Owen Grant to Kurtz lead to goal No. 8 for the Blue Hens that was a sight to see. Both teams traded goals collecting five goals apiece in the quarter.
Duke managed to control the scoreboard and outscore Delaware in the fourth quarter 5-2 to earn the victory and snap UD's three-game win streak.
Today was the second time this season that two Blue Hens have recorded a hat trick in the same game. Both Ward and Kurtz finished with four goals each.
Kilkeary finished with 11 saves and one ground ball in 60 minutes in the net. Reed Kurtz led the way with five ground balls, while Grant had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Sean Lulley led Duke with five goals and two assists for seven points. Andrew McAdorey registered four goals and two assists and Dyson Williams added four goals and one assist.
The Blue Devils fared better in faceoff opportunities winning 29 of the 37. Goalkeeper Mike Adler earned the win today with eight saves in 36:44 in the net.
