Men’s Lacrosse Lights Up the Scoreboard in Season Opener

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware's Clay Miller, Mike Robinson, JP Ward were unstoppable today in the Blue Hens season-opening win over visiting NJIT (0-1). The trio combined for 13 of Delaware's points in the 19-9 victory.
"What a beautiful day for lacrosse in Delaware Stadium!," said head coach Ben DeLuca. "I'm proud of the effort our young men put forth today to earn a true team win in our season and home opener. Our captains demonstrated great leadership and helped guide our team through a challenging week of practice."
The 16th-ranked Blue Hens (1-0) scored fast and often this afternoon at Delaware Stadium. Robinson was perfect from the field, as he made all six of his shot attempts, in addition to tallying a trio of assists. He scored the first goal of the game at the 13:32 mark to ignite a 7-0 run.
NJIT's Darren Romaine scored with 2:42 left on the first quarter clock to snap the Blue Hens' scoring streak. The Highlanders scored their second goal of the game less than 30 seconds later to trim Delaware's lead to
five.
Delaware held a 10-4 advantage heading into the break thanks to its ability to move the ball and keep the Highlanders on edge. Coming out of halftime, Ward, who finished with four goals and one assist, found the back of the net 42 seconds into the second half to continue the Blue Hens' scoring. Miller had back-to-back goals in the third quarter to aid in the offensive scoring spree.
The Blue Hens played a good portion of their roster and it showed as nine different players scored and six different players recorded an assist. Delaware fired 34 shots overall with 26 coming on goal.
Kevin Lynch secured six groundballs and caused a pair of turnovers, while Owen Grant registered three groundballs and forced a trio of turnovers. Matt Kilkeary managed the net this afternoon, picking up four saves to earn the win. Peter Ripperger made an appearance late in the fourth quarter and registered a save.
NJIT was led by Gage Adams with two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Liam Brown recorded four saves and Yanni Kalas came off the bench to add three saves.
Today's victory improved the all-time series to 5-0 in favor of the Blue Hens.
"There is certainly room for improvement and plenty to correct as we move forward, but there are also many positives to build on. Overall, this was a good first step for the 2022 team," DeLuca added.
The Blue Hens return to Delaware Stadium next weekend when they host Mount St. Mary's at 2 p.m. The women's team will host No. 17 Rutgers at 11 a.m. in the first game of the doubleheader.
