Blue & Gold Split with Villanova in Final Nonconference Weekend Series

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The University of Delaware softball team split a doubleheader against Villanova on Sunday afternoon at Villanova Softball Complex. The Blue Hens lost the first game, 2-0, and had a come-from-behind 3-1 victory in extra innings. With the split, UD moves to 16-8 on the season, while the Wildcats sit at (10-16).

Game One: Villanova 2, Delaware 0
The Blue & Gold dropped a pitcher's duel that saw just seven combined hits.

Emily Winburn fired her fourth-consecutive complete game, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out six. Halle Kisamore recorded two hits, while Emily Blum had one.
Â
Villanova took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double followed by an RBI single.
Â
Delaware's best chance came in the top of the third when Kisamore singled up the middle with one runner on, but Hanna Garber was thrown out at the plate.

Game Two: Delaware 3, Villanova 1
Kailey Christian drove in one run to knot the game up, while Brittney Mendoza drove in two more for the lead in the top of the eighth as UD overcame a late deficit.

Graceyn Frost threw a complete game and earned her seventh win of the season, while allowing just one unearned run and striking out a career-high nine batters. Christian led the offense with two hits, while six other Blue Hens all had base knocks. Kisamore scored two runs.

Villanova jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when scoring on a throw that caught the runner stealing second.

The Blue Hens continuously had runners on base, but came up empty-handed until the top of the sixth when they put one run on the board to tie the game. Kisamore singled and Christian brought her home on an RBI double down the right field line.

In the top of the eighth, Kisamore was hit by a pitch, and Mendoza followed with a two-run home run to give UD its first lead of the day, 3-1.

Frost retired 15 of the final 16 batters that she faced, while not allowing a base runner over the final three innings including striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.

The Blue Hens will open conference play next weekend with a three-game series at UNCW. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game Sunday, both starting at 12 p.m.
