NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team completed its second-consecutive CAA series sweep as it won all three games against Drexel. The Blue Hens started Sunday by winning the first game of the series that was suspended from Sunday before taking both games of a doubleheader by scores of 7-4 and 2-0. With the wins, UD has now won seven-straight games and improves to 24-11 on the season and 7-2 in CAA play.
Game One: Delaware 7, Drexel 4
Graceyn Frost started in the circle and went 4.0 innings, allowing four runs but just one earned run. She struck out four. Emily Winburn earned the win with 3.0 shutout innings of relief with three strikeouts.
Brooke Glanden had two hits and two RBI while Brittney Mendoza also had two hits and drove in a pair.
The Blue Hens opened the scoring quickly in the bottom of the first inning. Hanna Garber reached on an error and stole consecutive bases immediately. She scored when Mendoza lined a RBI double into the right-center field gap. Halle Kisamore followed with an infield single and Mendoza scored when the throw to first was wild to give UD a 2-0 lead.
Drexel answered with a run in the second and took the lead with two unearned runs in the fourth. The Dragons made it a 4-2 game with another unearned run in the fifth.
Delaware's bats came back to life in the bottom of the fifth inning as Garber reached on another error and again scored on a double, this time by Glanden. Mendoza followed with her second RBI of the game with a single to drive in the pinch-runner Grace Rudolph. A bunt and wild pitch moved Mendoza to third before she scored to give the Blue Hens the lead on a ground ball by Kailey Christian.
A two-run single by Glanden in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring both Sarah Bessel and Garber to provide the final 7-4 score.
Game Two: Delaware 2, Drexel 0
Winburn picked up her second win of the day, and 10th of the season, as she went 5.1 shutout innings in the circle, striking out three while scattering four hits and two walks. Megan Stauffer earned her third save of the year with 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit.
Delaware had just two hits in the game, but made them both count. Garber led off the bottom of the first with a single and quickly stole second. She went to third on a ground out and scored when Mendoza lifted a sacrifice fly to left to put UD up early 1-0.
In the third, Bessel laid down a bunt single and went all the way to third on a throwing error. Garber drove her in one out later with a sacrifice fly into center field to complete the scoring.
Drexel threatened multiple times, but both Winburn and Stauffer, along with some strong UD defense, kept the Dragons off the board and finished the sweep.
The Blue Hens will be off until next weekend when they resume CAA play with a three-game series at Towson. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. before completing the weekend with a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday
