4/16/2022 4:01:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
NEWARK, Del. – It was a fun and thrilling game this afternoon as an all-around team performance at Delaware Stadium for the Delaware men's lacrosse team lifted them to an 11-10 victory over Towson (5-7, 1-2 CAA) in front of a crowd of nearly 1,200 fans.
"That was a gritty team victory from start to finish," said head coach Ben DeLuca. "We won a tough conference game with a collective effort led by some key players who stepped up and made big plays in clutch moments today. I'm proud of our upperclassmen for the way they led our team this week in practice and happy to see their efforts rewarded. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, the crowd was awesome and our players delivered when it mattered most."
It's always a battle between the Blue Hens and the Tigers and today brought the same intensity. Towson managed to squeeze out two goals to start the game and take a 2-0 advantage. Towson's scoring spree was halted by Tye Kurtz who scored at the 2:36 mark.
The second quarter brought a much different look to the Delaware offense as Blue Hens outscored the Tigers 5-1 in the quarter to claim a 6-3 advantage at the break. Mike Robinson scored both of his goals in the quarter, along with goals from Joe Speers, Mark Bieda, and Nick Jessen.
Drew Lenkaitis started the scoring for Delaware in the third quarter when he found the back of the net at the 13:18 mark. It was a back and forth scoring battle for the two teams in the third quarter which kept the Tigers at arm's length.
With a four-goal lead heading into the fourth and final quarter, the Tigers applied the pressure and turned it into a one-goal game with 1:07 remaining. Due to a faceoff that went in the Blue Hen's favor and some stellar defense by Delaware, the victory went to the home team as the clock hit zero.,
Eight different players scored a goal today as Bieda led Delaware (7-5, 1-2 CAA) with three goals on five shots, in addition to two assists.
Kevin Lynch had four caused turnovers and three ground balls and Owen Grant added two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Kilkeary made the most of his start in the goal today as he made 17 saves and had three ground balls in the win.
