Men’s Lacrosse Drops CAA Home Opener to Hofstra, 12-11

Grant becomes UD all-time career caused turnovers leader with 74.
NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware men's lacrosse team fell to visiting Hofstra, 12-11, in its Colonial Athletic Association home opener at Delaware Stadium.
The Pride scored first with 12:58 on the clock after a goal by Dylan McIntosh. The Blue Hens then followed with back-to-back goals by Owen Grant and JP Ward to take a 2-1 lead. By the end of the first quarter, the Blue Hens held a 4-2 advantage over the visitors from New York.
The second quarter saw Delaware extend its lead to 6-4 before Hofstra managed to score three consecutive goals to go into the break with a one-goal lead of 7-6.
With another pair of back-to-back goals, this time within seven seconds of each other, Jason Kolar found the back of the net, followed by Tye Kurtz to tie the game at 8-8. Hofstra scored three goals to close out the third quarter and earn its biggest lead of the game at three goals.
Delaware outscored Hofstra 3-1 in the fourth quarter, including two goals by Mike Robinson at the 3:05 and 0:33 marks, but the Blue Hens ran out of time before the clock struck zero. The loss dropped the Blue Hens to 6-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. The Pride improved to 5-7 and 1-1 in CAA play.
Ward led the Blue Hens with three goals and one assist, while Reed Kurtz scooped up a team-high six ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Paul Reidy had seven saves in 26 minutes of play. Matt Kilkeary was tabbed with the loss after 33 minutes in the goal and eight saves.
Grant posted a season-high four caused turnovers to claim the No. 1 spot on the Delaware career charts with 74. The previous record of 72 was set by Austin Haynes in 2019. The senior finished the game with one goal, one assist, four ground balls, and four caused turnovers.
McIntosh and Rory Jones led the Pride with three goals each. Mac Gates earned the win in the goal after 11 saves.
The Blue Hens had the edge in ground balls 32-27 and were perfect on clear attempts going 19-for-19.
Before the game, 10 Blue Hens were honored for Senior Day – Peter Ripperger, Tye Kurtz, George Ward, Kyle Kivinski, Tommy Beeby, Demetrius Stevenson, Clay Miller, Jason Seiter, Matt Kilkeary, Kevin McCormick, Kevin Lynch, Mark Bieda, Blake Gagen, Jed Raby, Owen Grant, and Jake Govett.
The Blue Hens will host Towson on Saturday, April 16 at noon in their home finale.
