Blue Hens Fall Short at No. 11 James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Delaware women's lacrosse team came up short against No. 11 James Madison in a back-and-forth game, dropping the final regular-season road game, 14-11.
"Our staff and team did a fantastic job all week preparing for this game," said head coach Amy Altig. "I am beyond proud of how our team competed today. They made a name for themselves today through their relentless mentality and gritty play. It was not the outcome we wanted in the end but this team took a huge step forward with this game today."
The Blue Hens (5-10, 2-3 CAA) got on the board first with Lizzie Hsu netting her first of three goals with an assist from Riley Gillin. JMU tied the game at 1-1 briefly before Sydni Rosa netted her first goal of the day on a free position. The Dukes went on a three-goal run to end the first period up 4-2.
No. 11 James Madison (12-4, 5-0 CAA) opened the second quarter with a goal, but the Blue Hens made an attempt to come back, scoring three times before the first half to get within one goal of JMU, 6-5. Delaney McDaniel, Kendra Schweizer and Kiera Grant all scored for the Hens.
The Dukes scored twice at the beginning of the third quarter, but Delaware came out on fire, scoring five-straight goals taking a 10-8 lead. Rosa scored twice in the five-goal streak to complete her hat trick on the day.
JMU scored the final goal of the third quarter and five goals in the fourth quarter to secure the 14-11 win. Lizzie Hsu scored her third goal of the game with under eight minutes remaining in the game.
Goalkeeper Mercy McCarthy had eight stops in the cage and held a .364 save percentage. JMU's Molly Dougherty had 11 saves and an even .500 with 22 shots on goal apiece. The Blue Hens had a 16-13 advantage in draw controls, with Danielle Livornese tallying a game-high 10 on the day.
The Blue Hens return home for their regular-season finale as they host Towson in Delaware Stadium on Saturday, April 30 at 12 p.m.
