Women's Lacrosse Drops Home Finale to Towson

NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware women's lacrosse team dropped its home finale against Towson, 17-10, Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hens, however, still earned a spot in the CAA Lacrosse Championship as the No. 4 seed.
On a warm and breezy day in Newark, Towson (8-7, 5-1 CAA) got an early lead going up 2-0 in the first two minutes of the game. Danika Swech got on the board for the Blue Hens in an attempt to shrink Towson's lead, but the Tigers scored once again making it a 3-1 game. Keira Grant then netted her first of three goals of the day with an assist from Sydni Rosa before Towson ended the first period with two more goals for a 5-2 lead.
Delaware (5-11, 2-4 CAA) was the first team to score in the second period as Grant scored her second goal of the day on an assist from Swech. Towson answered back with a goal a minute later, but the Blue Hens chipped away at the Tigers' lead with goals from Swech and Halen Saroney to make it a 6-5 game. Towson began to pull away, scoring four-straight goals before Grant secured her first career hat trick to snap Towson's streak. Goals by Lizzie Yurchak and the Tigers' Kerri Thornton ended the second period with Towson holding an 11-7 lead at the half.
Towson opened up the third period with two goals to extend its lead, 13-7. Kendra Schweizer cut through the eight-meter and sent a rocket into the back of the net after receiving a feed from Delaney McDaniel to add another goal for the Blue Hens. Towson scored once more, but Yurchak was able to score on a free position before the end of the third period to make it a 14-9 game.
The Tigers scored three more times in the fourth quarter while Lizzie Hsu scored the final goal for the Blue Hens on an assist from McDaniel, taking Towson's goalkeeper Carly Merlo one-on-one. Towson secured the 17-10 win with a final goal.
Towson's Merlo earned the win making nine stops in the cage and holding a .474 save percentage. Mercy McCarthy also made nine saves and had a .346 save percentage.
Towson held the advantage in shots (32-26), shots on goal (26-19), draw controls (19-12) and ground balls (18-16).
The Blue Hens will meet the Tigers again in the CAA Lacrosse Championship hosted by Drexel in Philadelphia. No. 4 Delaware will play No. 1 Towson at 4 p.m. Friday, May 6 in the semifinals. This will be the first time that the Blue & Gold will appear in the CAA Lacrosse Championship since 2018.
