Long Ball Pushes Baseball to Series Victory Over Hofstra

"With it being the first weekend in conference, that's how you want to start play," head coach Greg Mamula said. "High-scoring offensive day. We took advantage of the ball carrying out to left."
After opening the scoring in the first inning, Delaware scored three in the second on RBI hits by JJ Freeman and Joey Loynd.
Hofstra scratched a run back in the third inning before back-to-back home runs by Delaware in its half, as Freeman deposited a grand slam over the right-field wall and Dan Covino followed with his first home run of the game to make it a 9-1 affair.
Despite Hofstra fighting to within three, Delaware was not done. Brett Lesher led off the fifth with his second home run of the series. The Hens chased across three more in the fifth to make it a 13-6 game.
Later in the sixth, Covino destroyed his second home run of the game to right field, stretching the lead to 15-6.
"I struggled yesterday, and I felt like I saw the ball well today," Covino said. "We were really patient at the plate, and that helped us in today's game."
Hofstra added two runs in the eighth, and Joey Loynd responded with a two-run shot, his third home run of the weekend. Jackson Tyer sent his first career home run into orbit later in the eighth, stretching it to 19-9.
"[Jackson] has worked really hard to get to this point," Mamula said. "He's got great power, and he finally had the chance to show it today."
Freeman went 3-for-6 with a home run, double and five RBIs in the victory, while Covino joined him with three hits, swatting two homers. Delaware's 13 walks tied a program record for walks in a game.
The Hens have a quick turnaround, hosting Maryland on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
