Baseball Falls to Maryland in Extra-Inning Affair

NEWARK, Del. – Six runs across the ninth and tenth innings by Maryland (9-7) proved to be too much for Delaware baseball (6-10, 2-1 CAA) as it fell 13-11 in ten innings on Wednesday.
Maryland scratched three runs against starter Nate Rolka in the first inning, but Delaware fought back with five of its own to go in front 5-3 after one frame.
Maryland recorded two homers against relief pitcher Wyatt Nelson in the fourth and fifth innings to pull ahead at 7-5.
In its half of the fifth, Delaware used two triples to start a rally. Bryce Greenly had a wind-aided triple go off the right-field wall, his first of two triples in the contest. Joey Loynd drove in Greenly, and Jake Dunion followed with an RBI triple of his own to knot the game at seven.
The Hens were not done in the fifth, as Andrew Amato swatted a two-run shot deep into the woods in right field, his second blast of the season, to regain the lead at 9-7.
Nelson continued to impress on the mound, keeping the Terps off the board for the next four innings.
The Hens added an insurance run in the eighth on a Gabe Dermott sacrifice fly.
Nelson remained on the mound for the ninth inning, and after recording an out, loaded the bases. Dan Frake entered the game and surrendered four runs to give Maryland the lead.
Delaware clawed back in the bottom half of the ninth, as Jackson Tyer came across to score on a wild pitch, as the game went to extra innings tied at 11.
In the top of the tenth, Maryland chased across two runs on a pair of RBI hits, which were too much to overcome. The Blue & Gold went quietly in the bottom half, falling 13-11.
Greenly's two triples were the second time he has done so in as many years, also doing so against Iona during the 2022 season. He and Loynd each had three hits in the loss.
The Hens begin a three-game non-conference series with UMass Lowell on Friday.
