Offense Lifts Baseball in St. Patrick’s Day Rout of UMass Lowell

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware baseball (7-10, 2-1 CAA) scored runs in all but one inning as it routed UMass Lowell (2-13) 20-2 on Friday.
"That's a great start to the weekend," head coach Greg Mamula said. "The offense just kept stringing together good at-bat after good at-bat. We drove some baseballs, and Eli [Atiya] attacked while he was out there."
Dan Covino began the St. Patrick's Day festivities in the first inning, cracking a two-run shot over the right-field wall to give Delaware a two-run lead two batters into the game.
Joey Loynd immediately followed with his first home run of the game, beginning what would become a two-homer, seven-RBI effort.
"My swing feels good," Loynd said. "My timing is starting to pick up now that we're seeing more pitchers, and it's fun hitting in a lineup with guys around you that can mash."
The Blue Hens were up four after one frame and added even more in the second inning on a trio of long balls. Bryce Greenly deposited his fifth homer of the season to start and Loynd added his second of the day soon after.
Tyler Leach drove a home run to dead-center field to make it seven more runs in the second. The long ball was his first collegiate home run.
Starter Eli Atiya had the longest outing of any Delaware starting pitcher this season, firing five shutout frames, striking out four and allowing just four hits, recording his team-leading third win.
"[Eli] was only at 75 pitches through five innings, he was efficient," Mamula said. "With the pitch count and the run rule, we were able to save our bullpen today."
Delaware scattered nine runs across the final five innings, scoring in all but the bottom of the sixth. It was the second time the Blue & Gold scored more than 20 runs this season and the seventh time the team scored ten or more.
Loynd set a new career-high with seven RBIs, his fifth time recording four or more and his seventh multi-RBI effort of the season. He now sits one RBI shy of 100 career and has ten hits in his last three games.
Shortstop JJ Freeman recorded his 200th collegiate hit in the first inning.
The second game of the series is Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
