Covino’s Late-Inning Homer, Strong Pitching Push Baseball over UMass Lowell

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware baseball (8-10, 2-1 CAA) fought tooth and nail for a one-run victory over UMass Lowell (2-15) on Saturday, using late-inning heroics to win 3-2.
"You just know in college baseball after games [like yesterday], the next day is going to be a dogfight," head coach Greg Mamula said. "Credit to UMass Lowell. You could see they were going to play aggressively today and throw the first punch, and they did."
Starter Bryce Greenly allowed an unearned run in the first inning after a pair of Blue Hens errors, but settled in, dueling with Riverhawks starter Matt Draper. Greenly kept UML off the board after the first, tossing five innings and allowing just the one unearned run.
Draper blanked the Blue Hens through five innings, but the Blue & Gold scratched a run across following consecutive doubles by Greenly and Joey Loynd. Loynd's RBI double was his 100th career RBI.
The Hens found more offensive life in the seventh inning. With a runner on third and two out, Dan Covino hit a 3-2 offering high over the right-field wall for his second homer in as many days and his fifth of the season to give Delaware the lead for good.
"I knew I got that one a little bit but didn't know if it would leave," Covino said. "I saw the flags blowing to the right, so I knew it had a chance."
Reliever Carter Welch worked out of a few jams, and despite the visitors scoring in the top of the ninth, retired the final batter to earn his first win of the season.
Greenly, Loynd, JJ Freeman and Brett Lesher each recorded multiple hits in the victory.
The final game of the series is Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
