NEWARK, Del. - Lizzie Yurchak scored a career-best six goals, including the game-tying at the end of regulation and game-winning in overtime, to help lead Delaware women's lacrosse to a comeback, 13-12, win over Monmouth on Senior Day. Delaware came back from a five-goal second-half deficit, their largest come-from-behind win since defeating George Mason 16-8 after trailing 7-2 on March 13, 2019. Prior to the start of the game, the Blue Hens recognized the careers of Harley Pilling, Mercy McCarthy, Meghan Johnson, Sydni Rosa, Brooke Ciampaglio, Mae Dickens, Eleanor Farris, Megan Bozzi, Madison Hranicka, Lizzie Hsu, Laurel McHale, and Sophia Murray.
"Today was a great example of our team's resilience and fight, head coach Amy Altig said. "Really proud of how we battled back against an incredibly talented Monmouth team. A fantastic team win for our program on Senior Day."
Hsu scored two goals, while Riley Gillin, Morgan Gore, Danielle Livornese, Keira Grant, and McKenzie Didio all scored in addition to Yurchak's six. Gillin and Delaney McDaniel had two assists, while Bozzi and Hsu tallied two. Defensively, Hranicka starred with six ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Emma Hoffman had three caused turnovers and two ground balls. McCarthy made nine saves in goal. Livornese also had seven draw controls.
In the first quarter, Monmouth scored the game's first three goals. Hsu got Delaware on the board on a free position shot, and Didio followed that up with a goal on an assist from GIllin before Monmouth tacked on to end the quarter.
Monmouth outscored Delaware 5-2 in the second quarter to take a 9-4 halftime lead. Yurchak and Gillin both scored goals for Delaware during the second in the Blue Hens' attempt to build momentum.
Monmouth and Delaware traded goals to begin the third, with Yurchak opening the half with her second. Delaware then went on a 4-0 run in four minutes to cut the deficit to 10-9. McDaniel connected with Hsu at the 7:18 mark to begin the rally, then Hsu assisted on Gore's goal. McDaniel had her second assist on Yurchak's third goal of the game, then Livornese capped the run off at the 4:18 mark with a goal off an assist from Gillin.
The Hawks opened up the fourth with back-to-back goals to take a 12-9 lead with 8:27 to go. Bozzi and Grant scored in transition to jumpstart the Blue Hens' comeback, then Yurchak cut the deficit to one at the 4:56 mark. She scored again with 14 seconds to play on a free-position shot to tie the game.
In overtime, Livornese won the draw control, and Yurchak scored 30 seconds into the extra frame to send Delaware to a win. Delaware went on two separate 4-0 runs in the second half, including one to end the game. Yurchak scored five of her six goals in the second half, including the game's final three goals.
The six goals scored by Yurchak were the most by a Delaware player since Sydney Rausa had six against Drexel on April 19, 2019. With her game-winner too, she reached 50 goals for her career. With Hranicka's three caused turnovers, she moved into a tie with Erin Zimmerman for the fifth most caused turnovers in program history with 56. McDaniel also reached 50 career assists during the game. Delaware improved to 7-0 all-time against Monmouth, and it was Delaware's first overtime victory since defeating Elon, 12-11, on March 7, 2020, a double-overtime win.
Delaware will head to Williamsburg, Va. to play William & Mary on April 1, with the game starting at 12:00 p.m.
