Walk-Off Wild Pitch Earns Baseball Comeback Victory Over North Carolina A&T
4/15/2023 9:05:00 PM | Baseball
NEWARK, Del. – With Dan Covino up at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, a wild pitch by North Carolina A&T's Trent Simmons sent Jake Dunion home as Delaware (19-16, 8-6 CAA) snatched a 4-3 victory from the Aggies (14-17, 6-9) on Saturday.
"Once we had bases loaded and nobody out, you're thinking 'here comes a hit or sac fly'," head coach Greg Mamula said. "After back-to-back strikeouts, the pressure was back on us, but we got the wild pitch walk-off."
Delaware's Joey Silan and NC A&T's Xavier Meachem traded zeroes through three innings, but small-ball opportunities chased home three runs against Silan to dig Delaware a three-run hole.
Meachem continued to impress over the next few innings, holding Delaware to just one hit, but unraveled in the sixth, allowing home runs to Aidan Kane and Covino to knot the game at three.
Chris Grome and Owen Margolis kept the Aggies off the board as the teams remained deadlocked until the bottom of the ninth.
Dunion led off with a single before Andrew Amato's single advanced him to second, but a bobble by the center fielder allowed both runners to advance.
Eric Ludman was intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out, but back-to-back strikeouts brought Covino up in a big spot.
In a 2-2 count, Simmons sailed the ball over the catcher, which allowed Dunion to race home with the winning run, another alert baserunning play in the inning, sealing a 4-3 victory.
"I was just glad I could get on base for the team to start it up," Dunion said. "Glad I was able to pick the teammates up, got a little help from the pitcher there, but that was so fun."
Covino extended his hitting streak to 12 games and home run streak to four games, while Kane recorded his fourth homer of the season. Delaware has now won four consecutive games, ten of 12 overall, and nine in a row at home.
Delaware will aim for the sweep on Sunday with first pitch coming at 1:00 p.m.
