Women's Lacrosse Clinches CAA Tournament Spot With Win Over Towson

NEWARK, Del. - Delaware's women's lacrosse team clinched the final CAA Tournament spot with a victory against Towson in the regular-season finale on Saturday, April 29 at Delaware Stadium. The Blue Hens pulled off a 13-9 win over the Tigers, securing the No. 4 seed and a date with No. 1 seed and No. 10 nationally-ranked Stony Brook on Thursday, May 4 at noon. Delaware has made back-to-back CAA Tournament, after being the No. 4 seed last year too, and clinched their 13th appearance in the CAA Tournament in program history. The CAA Tournament is hosted by Towson University at Tiger Field, and Towson and Drexel round out the field as the No. 2 and 3 seeds.
"Great team win for us today," head coach Amy Altig said. "Our team did what they needed to do to secure a place in the CAA tournament and we are so proud of them for that. This staff worked hard all week to prepare the team for this game and our team played an excellent game."
Defensively, Madison Hranicka and Mercy McCarthy starred for Delaware, as they held Towson to their lowest goal total in CAA play this year. Hranicka had six caused turnovers and five ground balls, while McCarthy made 11 saves in goal. Sam Schelling had three caused turnovers and threee ground balls, and recorded three draw controls, while Sydni Rosa had three ground balls. Hsu led the charge offensively, scoring a game-high four goals. Livornese had three goals and an assist and recorded three controls. Delaney McDaniel and Lizzie Yurchak both scored a pair of goals, with McDaniel also dishing out an assist and Yurchak recording six draw controls. Rosa and Riley Gillin both added a goal each, with Gillin also picking up an assist. Megan Bozzi and Morgan Gorealso handed out assists.
Towson scored the game's first goal just 45 seconds in, but Delaware immediately answered with four-straight, including three goals coming in a span of two minutes and 21 seconds. Yurchak started the run before Hsu scored two straight, one being a free-position shot. Hsu then scored once again with 6:36 remaining to put Delaware up 4-1. Towson scored three straight goals to tie the game with 5:45 left of the half. The Blue Hens regained momentum to close out the second, with Livornese scoring to give Delaware the lead back. Rosa scored with 90 seconds left, and Livornese scored once more to end the half to send Delaware into the third quarter up 7-5.
Towson again scored the first goal of the half, but Gillin and Yurchak scored to put Delaware back up three. McDaniel scored in between two mow Towson goals to help give UD a two-goal bumper heading into the fourth. Delaware's defense shut Towson down in the final quarter, holding the Tigers without a goal until there was 1:26 remaining. Livornese, McDaniel, and Hsu all found the back of the net before then putting the game away and securing Delaware's berth in the CAA Tournament.
Hranicka recorded her second game this season with at least six caused turnovers, becoming the fourth player this season with multiple games with at least six caused turnovers and the only CAA player. She now has 79 for her career, one shy of joining Erin Wein (126), Chantae Simms (90), Caitlin McCartney (86), and Becky Gohsler as the only players in program history with 80 caused turnovers. She also added to her single-season program record, now totaling 46 on the year. She also recorded her fifth game this season with at least five ground balls, and now has 39 on the season. Livornese is now up to 74 draw controls on the season, seven shy of tying the single-season program record, and 161 for her career, 25 shy of tying the UD career record. Delaware had 15 draw controls, once again outpacing the opposition for the eighth time this season. With their 15 draw controls, Delaware set a new program record for draw controls. They now have 230 for the year, besting their record of 218 done in 2008. Hsu recorded her fourth hat trick of the season and ninth of her career, and Livornese recorded her eighth hat trick of the season and ninth of her career. Both Bozzi and Yurchak now sit at 96 points in their careers. McDaniel is now up to 31 assists on the season, only trailing Mia DeRuggiero (53, 2019 and 36, 2018), Denise Swift (43, 1984), and Karen Emas (34, 1983 and 32, 1984) for most in a season in program history. McCarthy recorded her fourth game this season with at least 10 saves, and her second with at least 10 saves and fewer than 10 goals allowed.
Delaware concluded the regular season with eight wins, four CAA wins, and five wins at home. It's their most overall wins and home wins in a season since going 8-10 overall and 5-3 at home in 2018. Their 4-3 CAA record is their best since going 4-2 in 2017.
The CAA Tournament begins with No. 1 Stony Brook and No. 4 Delaware on May 4 at noon, at Tiger Stadium at Towson University. The winner will play No. 2 Towson or No. 3 Drexel on Saturday, May 6.
