Blue Hens Slug Past Saint Joseph's 12-4

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team broke out its bats on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Saint Joseph's 12-4 in a six-inning victory. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 16-15 overall.
Graceyn Frost fired a complete game to pick up her first win of the year. She went 6.0 allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits while striking out five.
Hanna Graber led the offense with three hits and three RBI. Grace Hrustich had an RBI double and three walks while Sydeny Shaffer was also on base four times with two hits and two walks. Julz Garber had two hits and Kiara Mills was on base three times with a hit and two hit-by-pitches.
Saint Joseph's got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning with four runs, two wild pitches, and an error to take the early lead.
The Blue Hens answered in a big way in the bottom of the second inning.Two walks and a single loaded the bases before Jayla Brooks drove Hrustich with a sacrifice fly. Hanna Garber followed suit with an RBI single to score Chloe Blantz. After loading the bases again, Katie Scheivert launched a three-run double into the left-center field gap to score all three runs. Brittney Mendoza singled to put runners on the corners before a double steal brought Scheivert across the plate to give UD a 6-4 advantage.
Hrustich extended the lead to 7-4 with an RBI double in the fourth inning before Erica Paisley used her speed to score an unearned run in the fifth to make it 8-4.
In the sixth Blantz doubled off of the right field wall to score Mendoza and then, with two outs, Hanna Garber lined a run double to score Shaffer and Blantz and secure the run-rule victory.
The Blue Hens will remain home this weekend for a three-game CAA series against Stony Brook. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m. Saturday's series finale will also begin at 1 p.m.
