NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team swept a CAA doubleheader on Friday afternoon with a pair of wins over Stony Brook at Delaware Softball Stadium. The Blue Hens won the first game 1-0 before coming away with a 5-2 victory in game two. With the two wins, UD has now won six-straight games and eight straight in conference play while improving to 18-15 overall and 9-2 in the CAA.
Game One: Delaware 1, Stony Brook 0
The Blue Hens extended their overall winning streak to five-straight games and recorded their fifth-consecutive shutout in CAA play.
Emily Winburn started in the circle and fired her ninth complete game of the season, and 30th of her career. She went 7.0 innings and allowed just three base hits while striking out four. It was her third shutout of the season and she has now thrown 19.2 consecutive scoreless innings.
Grace Hrustich went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the offense, while Jayla Brooks had two hits.
It was a pitcher's duel early on as both teams were quiet through the first three innings before Delaware broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth. Brittney Mendoza and Hrustich led off with consecutive singles and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Brooks lined an RBI single to score Mendoza for the 1-0 lead.
Winburn was on cruise control as she retired the side in order on four occasions. She stranded the tying run at second in the seventh to preserve the shutout.
Game Two: Delaware 5, Stony Brook 2
Kiara Mills was on base four times with two hits, a hit-by-pitch and a walk while Chloe Blantz had two hits and Katie Scheivert was on base twice. Mendoza had three RBI and reached base
Taylor Wroten went the distance in the circle for her fourth complete game of the year. She allowed two runs on just five hits while striking out four.
The Blue Hens jumped out to a quick lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Hanna Garber led off with a single and eventually moved to third on a ground out and another single. Mendoza lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Garber and give UD a 1-0 lead.
Delaware batted around in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four times to extend its lead to 5-0. A walk, single and double steal put two runners in scoring position before Mendoza delivered a single into center field to push both runners across the plate. Consecutive walk loaded the bases with nobody out before an RBI single by Blantz and Brooks' sacrifice fly gave the Blue Hens a five-run lead.
Stony Brook cut into UD's lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it 5-2. The runs snapped Delaware's 42-inning shutout streak in CAA play.
Wroten stranded extra-base hits in the fifth and sixth innings before shutting the door with a perfect frame in the seventh to preserve the sweep.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a single game starting at 1 p.m.
