4/8/2023 2:47:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Delaware women's lacrosse used a big third quarter and second half to defeat Hofstra, 13-10, on Saturday, April 8 in Hempstead, N.Y. The Blue Hens were led by four goals from Lizzie Hsu, while Danielle Livornese had four goals and eight draw controls. Delaware also saw goals scored by Riley Gillin, Lizzie Yurchak, Megan Bozzi, Morgan Gore, Meghan Johnson, and McKenzie Didio. Bozzi had two assists and Yurchak and Riley both had one each. Defensively, Gillin had four ground balls and three caused turnovers, Keira Grant had three ground balls, and Madison Hranicka had two caused turnovers. Sam Schelling and Yurchak both had six draw controls, and Mercy McCarthy had eight saves.
"We are so proud of the fight our team showed today," head coach Amy Altig said. "We played together from start to finish and took care of our individual areas to secure the team win. Dani and our draw team were phenomenal in securing a lot of possessions and battling it out on every draw. Our defense picked it up in the second half and made big stops when we needed while our attack capitalized on the man-up opportunities."
Hsu scored her 50th career goal during the first quarter at the 11:49 mark, but Hofstra led 3-1 after the first 15 minutes. Both teams exchanged a pair of goals during the second, with Hsu scoring the second Delaware goal and Didio scoring with 2:33 remaining, as the Pride led 5-3 heading into halftime.
Delaware exploded for seven goals in the third, including six straight, to turn the two-goal deficit into a 10-6 lead. Their seven goals and six consecutive goals were the second most they've had in a quarter this season and second-best scoring run of the season. Hsu began the quarter with a goal before Hofstra responded for their lone score of the period. Bozzi scored at the 9:33 mark, then Delaware ripped off five goals in a span of three minutes and 42 seconds to take a 10-6 lead in the fourth. GIllin, Livornese, Hsu, Livornese again, and Johnson all scored during the run, while Gillin assisted on Livornese's second goal and Bozzi assisted on Johnson's goal.
Bozzi connected with Livornese for her third goal of the game during the fourth quarter. Gore and Yurchak put the finishing touches up on the win as Delaware clinched the road victory.
Delaware had 21 draw controls, compared to just six for Hofstra, tied for the fourth most in a game in program history and just five shy of their program record of 26 they accomplished against Old Dominion on Feb. 25. It's Delaware's sixth game this season with at least 20 draw controls. Entering the season, they had only five games of at least 20 draw controls recorded since 2005.
Livornese now has 61 draw controls this season, just 20 away from tying the single-season program record set by herself last season and Becky Gohsler in 2018. She is also 38 draw controls away from tying Gohsler's and Caitlin McCartney's program career record of 186. Livornese now has six games with at least three goals this season, including two straight, and seven for her career. Hsu recorded her third hat trick of the year and eighth of her career, and reached the 50-career goal mark. Bozzi's three points today give her 93 for her career. Gillin's four ground balls and three caused turnovers were both career highs. Hranicka now has 30 caused turnovers this season, the 11th time in program history a Blue Hen has reached that mark since 2001 and the first player to do it since Chantae Simms set the season record of 39 in 2019. Freshmen Didio has scored in four consecutive games and Gore has scored 10 of 12 games this season.
Delaware will return home to face Drexel on April 15 at noon.
