Women's Lacrosse CAA Tournament Preview: No. 1 Stony Brook

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware women's lacrosse will begin the 2023 CAA Conference Tournament tomorrow at 12:00 at Tiger Field in Towson, Md. against No. 1 seeded and No. 11 nationally ranked Stony Brook. Delaware is in the Tournament for the second consecutive year under head coach Amy Altig, and 13th overall. Winner will play either No. 2 seeded Towson or No. 3 seeded Drexel on Saturday.

Season Headlines
- Madison Hranicka was named CAA Defensive Player of the Year, the second CAA Defensive Player of the Year in Delaware program history (Erin Wein, 2016).
- Hranicka, along with Delaney McDaniel, were also named First-Team All-CAA, while Lizzie Yurchak was named All-CAA Second Team. Morgan Gore and McKenzie Didio were named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.
- Hranicka and McDaniel are the first pair of UD teammates to be named First-Team All-CAA since Mia DeRuggiero and Chantae Simms in 2019. Gore and Didio are the first pair of UD teammates named to the All-Rookie Team since Christine Long and Sydney Rausa in 2017.
- Between First, Second, and All-Rookie, the five All-Conference selections are the most for Delaware since having seven in 2017.
- Yurchak was named IWLCA Co-Offensive Player of the Week on March 28 after scoring six goals to tie a Delaware Stadium record, including five in the second half, to turn a 10-5 deficit into a 13-12 overtime win over Monmouth. She also earned CAA Player of the Week, while Madison Hranicka earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week, the first pair of Blue Hens to earn CAA Weekly honors in the same week since Shannon Hawley and Ali Karowski on March 30, 2015.
- Riley Gillin was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week on April 10 after she had four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while recording a goal and assist, in a 13-10 win over Hofstra.
- Hranicka was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week on April 17 after she tied a UD single game record with seven caused turnovers and scooped up six ground balls against Drexel.
- Hranicka was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week on May 1 after she had six caused turnovers and five ground balls in a CAA Tournament-berth clinching victory over Towson, helping hold Towson to their lowest goal total of the season at nine.
- Hranicka broke the single-season Delaware caused turnover record, previously set by Chantae Simms (2019) and Erin Wein (2016).
- Delaware has earned four Defensive Player of the Week honors so far this season, most in the CAA. Delaware had back-to-back Player of the Week honors for the first time since Kate Brewster and Chantae Simms on March 25 and April 1, 2019. Hranicka is the first Delaware player to earn three CAA Defensive Player of the Weeks in program history.
- Delaware's comeback against Monmouth on March 25 was their largest come-from-behind win since defeating George Mason 16-8 after trailing 7-2 on March 13, 2019. The six goals by Yurchak were the most by a UD player since Sydney Rausa had six against Drexel on April 19, 2019.
- In Delaware's CAA Tournament clinching win on April 29, they held Towson to their lowest goal total in conference play this season at nine.
- Delaware won four of their first five games of the season, their best five-game start since 2016 when they also started 4-1, and eventually won eight of their first nine games.
- Mercy McCarthy recorded her 200th save of her career in Delaware's game against Stony Brook, the 15th player in program history to reach the mark.
- Morgan Gore scored a goal in six straight games to begin her career, the longest streak by a Blue Hen in over 14 years. She was the first UD freshman to score a goal in six straight games since McKenzie Rafferty in 2013.
- Gore and McKenzie Didio are the first pair of freshmen to score at least 10 goals in a season since Christine Long (19), Sydney Rausa (12), and Mia DeRuggiero (10) in 2017.
- Megan Bozzi had a breakout game against UMBC, as the Coastal Carolina transfer scored her first three-career goals as a Blue Hen. Her hat trick was the ninth of her collegiate career, and her first with UD.
- Against UMBC, Mercy McCarthy became the first Delaware player to allow fewer than 10 goals and save at least 10 shots since Kate Brewster on March 4, 2020 against Duquesne.
- Delaware had a player score at least three goals in a game in their first five games to start the season and in 11 total (Livornese and Grant vs Lehigh, Livornese, Hsu, and Gore vs Lafayette, Livornese vs Temple, Livornese vs Old Dominion, Bozzi vs UMBC, Hsu vs Niagara, Yurchak vs Monmouth, Livornese vs William & Mary, Hsu, Livornese vs Hofstra, and Livornese vs Elon, Hsu and Livornese vs Towson).
- Livornese started the season by scoring at least three goals in four straight games, the first UD player to begin the season with four-straight three-goal games since Becky Gohsler in 2017.
- From Feb. 22-March 1 against Temple, Old Dominion, and UMBC, Delaware allowed fewer than 10 goals in three consecutive games for the first time since March 23-31, against UConn, Oregon, and Louisville.
- Against Old Dominion, an 18-9 win, Delaware had 26 draw controls, a new program record & the seventh most in an NCAA game this year. Danielle Livornese recorded 12 draw controls, tying the Delaware program
record only done by Caroline Farley on March 27, 2019 against Oregon & March 16, 2019 against St. Joe's. - Delaware has six games this season with at least 20 draw controls. Entering the season, they had only five games of at least 20 draw controls recorded since 2005.
- Delaney McDaniel, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, has two six-assist games this season. She, Mary Schumar (Marquette), Ava Yovino (Navy), Emma Ward (Syracuse), Kenna Newmton (Binghmaton), and Kathleen Sullivan
(Army) are the only players in the NCAA this season with two such games. - McDaniel (31) joined Mia DeRuggiero (53, 2019 and 36, 2018), Denise Swift (43, 1984), and Karen Emas (34, 1983 and 32, 1984) as the only players in UD history with 30+ assists in a season.
- Yurchak is one of three CAA players this year with 45+ draw controls, 30+ points, 15+ ground balls, & 15+ caused turnovers.
Madison Hranicka Notes
- Madison Hranicka is one of four players this year with at least 45 caused turnovers (46) and 35 ground balls (39). She is currently in fifth place on the all-time Delaware career caused turnover leaderboard with 79.
- Hranicka is also the eighth player in program history with at least 30 caused turnovers and 30 ground balls in a season, joining Christy Buck (2000), Liz Walton (2000), Ashley Moderacki (2001), Laurie Tortorelli (2002), Erin Wein (2014, 2015), Caitlin McCartney (2015), Becky Gohsler (2018), and Simms (2018, 2019).
- Hranicka is one of four players this season with multiple games with at least six caused turnovers. She also has five games this season with at least five ground balls.
- Against Drexel, Hranicka became the third player in program history with at least seven caused turnovers in a game, tying Erin Wein (March 5, 2016 vs Canisius) and Caitlin McCartney (March 4, 2015 vs Monmouth) for the most in UD history. She is also one of five players this season with at least seven caused turnovers and six ground balls in a game, and the only CAA player.
- Hranicka and Chantae Simms are the only players in Delaware history to have two games of at least six caused turnovers for their careers, and she and Caitlin McCartney are the only players in UD history with three career games with at least five caused turnovers. Hranicka is the only player in program history with three games of at least five caused turnovers in a single season.
- Hranicka is now the only player this season with three CAA Player of the Week honors, and the first CAA player with three since Paulina DiFatta of Elon did so in 2021. It's the first time since 2015 Delaware has had a CAA Defensive Player of the Week four times during the season, as Riley Gillin also received the honor earlier this season to go along with Hranicka's three. She's the first UD player with three CAA Defensive Player of the Week honors in a season.
